Castle of Púbol

The Castle of Púbol (or Gala Dalí Castle, in Catalan Castell de Púbol or Castell Gala Dalí), located in Púbol in the comarca of Baix Empordà, Girona, Catalonia, is a medieval building where the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí's enormous creative efforts were focused on a single person, his wife Gala, with the aim of providing her with a unique sanctuary and resting place.[1] In this sense, Gala is buried at the castle.[2]

In 1968, Dalí bought Gala the castle where she would spend time every summer from 1971 to 1980.[2] He also agreed not to visit there without getting advance permission from her in writing.[2]

After Gala's death in 1982, Dalí moved into the Castle for the first time. In 1984, a fire broke out in his bedroom[3] under unclear circumstances. It was possibly a suicide attempt by Dalí, or possibly simple negligence by his staff.[4] Dalí was rescued by friend and collaborator Robert Descharnes[5] and returned to Figueres, where a group of his friends, patrons, and fellow artists saw to it that he was comfortable living in his Theater-Museum for his final years.

In 1996, Gala's private castle in Púbol was opened to the public as the Gala-Dalí Castle House Museum.[2]
