Pétur was selected in the third round of the 1981 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, for whom he played during the 1981–82 season. In 68 games for the Trail Blazers, Gudmundsson averaged 3.2 points and 2.7 rebounds.[3] In August 1983 the Blazers traded him to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a 1984 third-round draft pick.[4][5]

After it was up he received another 10-day contract and then was signed for the rest of the season.[8][3] In 8 regular season games, he averaged 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds.

On February 13, 1987, he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs along with Frank Brickowski, two draft picks and an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for Mychal Thompson.[9]

He also coached Icelandic basketball team Valur/Fjölnir.[10]
