"Out Loud" is the debut single by American YouTuber, singer, and songwriter Gabbie Hanna. It was released independently on September 6, 2017, in support of her book of poems, Adultolescence (2017). Initially intended as a standalone single, the song was later announced as the lead single from her upcoming debut studio album, This Time Next Year after it went viral. "Out Loud" was written by Hanna and Bruce Wiegner, the latter of which served as the song's producer. Musically, "Out Loud" is a pop ballad that incorporates themes of loss into its lyrics.

Upon its release, "Out Loud" became a viral hit, reaching the top three on the United States iTunes charts. Commercially, it entered digital component charts in the United States and Canada. An accompanying music video was released on October 18, 2017, which featured the singer reminiscing an old boyfriend in an apartment and later at a funeral. To promote the song, Hanna performed the song at VidCon on August 12, 2018.

Background and release

"Out Loud" was first announced on August 30, 2017 to promote Hanna's book of poems, Adultolescence (2017).[1] The single was then independently released on September 6, 2017.[2] "Out Loud" was intended to be used as promotion for Adultolescence, but was later announced as the lead single from Hanna's upcoming debut studio album, This Time Next Year[3] following its viral success.[4]

Composition

"Out Loud" is a pop ballad with a length of three minutes and eighteen seconds.[5] It was written by Gabbie Hanna and Bruce Wiegner, while production was handled by Wiegner. The song is in the key of F major and moves at a tempo of 75 beats per minute.[6] It contains emotive lyrics and a sultry, dark melody that builds up to the song's chorus.[7] Lyrically, "Out Loud" discusses themes of loss.[8]

Critical reception

Tatiana Cirisano of Billboard called the song "no joke", and wrote "if listeners find it hard to reconcile the track's theme of loneliness with Hanna's 1.3 million Twitter followers, well, that's kind of the point."[7] Chris DeVille of Sterogum panned the song, writing that the song "plays more like an SNL Digital Short than a legitimate tearjerker."[9]

Music video

Prior to the video's release, Hanna stated that the video would contain a "major plot twist".[7] The music video for "Out Loud" was released on October 18, 2017. The video shows Hanna in an apartment, reminiscing memories with an old boyfriend. The second sequence in the video shows Hanna at her boyfriend's funeral. The video has reached 12 million views on YouTube, while the lyric video has reached 11.5 million.[4]

Live performances

Hanna performed the song at VidCon on August 12, 2018.[10]
