Oroklini (Greek: Ορόκλινη), or less commonly Voroklini (Βορόκληνη), is a village in Larnaca District, Cyprus, to the north-east of Larnaca. Its population in 2011 was 6,134.

History

Region around village is inhabited in ancient times.[4] It was intense mining in that region, especially copper.[4] Also there are number of quarries of grey soli, Umber and tera alba.[4] It was estate of despots, probably destroyed by Saracens. Leontios Machairas in his Chronicle mentioned in that region raids by the Saracens during the reign of Janus of Cyprus (1398-1432).[4] Oroklini and surrounding villages are abandoned in 15th century, then again temporary abandoned and again resettled in 16th century.[4] In 17. century it is mentioned in Venetian documents as Vorochini (Goodwin).[4] Again village was abandoned and again settled in 18th century.[4]

Bird protection area

Oroklini lake is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and was subject to a three-year project starting in January 2012 to bring the lake to ″favourable conservation status″. Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus) and the spur-winged lapwing (Vanellus spinosus) were the main target species along with fifty-eight bird species that migrate through, or overwinter within the SPA.[5] The shallow salt lakes are also home to greater flamingo.

Churches

There are several deserted chapels in the area next to the mountainside.The old small church of Archangel Michael from 17 century is built in byzantine style.[4] It was rebuilt in 1867.[4] New church of Archangel Michael is built in 1986.[4] Small church of Prophet Elias was built in 16. century on mountain summit west of village.[4] Church of Saint Thomas was monastery from 10th century.[4]
