Om Prakash Rawat (IAST: Oma Prakāśa Rāvata) (born 2 December 1953) is the current Chief Election Commissioner of India.[1] He is a retired 1977 batch IAS officer belonging to Madhya Pradesh cadre. He has also served as the Public Enterprise Secretary of India.
Education
Rawat is a graduate (BSc) and postgraduate (MSc) in Physics from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (BHU),[2][3][4] he also has a postgraduate degree (MSc) in Social Development Planning,[2][3][4] which he did in 1989 from the United Kingdom.[2][3][4]
Career
As an IAS officer
Rawat served in key positions for both the Union Government and the Madhya Pradesh, like as, Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries), Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Principal Secretary (Woman and Child development) Principal Secretary (Tribal Welfare), Vice Chairman of Narmada Valley Development Authority, Excise Commissioner of Madhya Pradesh, and as the District Magistrate and Collector of Narsinghpur and Indore districts in the Madhya Pradesh Government,[2][3][4] and as the Union Public Enterprise Secretary, and as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Defence in the Union Government.[2][3][4]
Public Enterprise Secretary
Rawat was appointed as the Union Public Enterprise Secretary by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) in March 2012, he assumed office on 3 March 2012,[2][3] and demitted it on and superannuation from service on 31 December 2013.[2][3]
Post retirement
Election Commissioner of India
Rawat assumed office as one of the two Election Commissioners of India on 14 August 2015.[5][6][7][8] Under his tenure at Election Commission, there would be general election to State legislative assemblies of Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Puducherry, Assam, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Besides this Presidential as well as Vice-Presidential elections would also be held under his tenure.[5][6]
Chief Election Commissioner of India
As the senior-most Election Commissioner, post the retirement of Achal Kumar Jyoti, Rawat was announced to be the next Chief Election Commissioner on 21 January 2018.[9][10][11][12][13] Rawat assumed charge as the Chief Election Commissioner of India on 23 January 2018.[14][15][16]
