Oliver James Dowden[1] CBE MP is a British Conservative Party politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hertsmere in Hertfordshire since May 2015,[2] and since January 2018 has served as Parliamentary Secretary at the Cabinet Office.

Early life and education

Dowden grew up in Bricket Wood, and was educated at Parmiter's School, a state comprehensive school in Garston in Hertfordshire,[3] followed by Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he studied Law.[4]

Career

Dowden joined the Conservative Research Department in 2004, moving to PR company Hill & Knowlton in 2007, before returning to the Conservative party in 2009.[5] Prior to his selection as Conservative candidate for Hertsmere, he worked as a special adviser, and David Cameron's deputy chief of staff.[4]

Dowden was opposed to Brexit prior to the 2016 referendum.[6]

In January 2018, Dowden was promoted to Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office, as part of Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle. [7]

Personal life

Dowden is married and has two children.[3][4] He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2015 Dissolution Honours Lists on 27 August 2015.[8]
