Development

On 4 February 2017, Kerala Kaumudi reported that a 3D film titled Odiyan was in development with Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles, written by Harikrishnan and to be directed by commercial director V. A. Shrikumar Menon in his feature film debut. Bachchan was reported to be playing the father role of Mohanlal's character, and Prakash Raj and Manju Warrier in other substantial roles. Reportedly the film was based on the legends of "Odiyan" community—mythical black magicians with the ability to shapeshift by using a trick called odi vidya. Inhabited mostly in Malabar regions, the legends says Odiyans used to terrorise people to death by assuming animal forms at night.[2] On 26 March 2017, the project was officially confirmed by Mohanlal via his social networking pages; he announced that Antony Perumbavoor would produce the film through Aashirvad Cinemas, Sabu Cyril (later replaced) and Shaji Kumar would serve as production designer and cinematographer, and Warrier would play the female lead role—though he did not mentioned Bachchan, Raj or the 3D format.[3] Meanwhile, Menon confirmed via media outlets that Raj would play a character with "shades of grey" and Warrier have an equally important role as Mohanlal's, while a leading Bollywood actor would also play a pivotal role; the crew includes Peter Hein as stunt coordinator, A. Sreekar Prasad as editor, M. Jayachandran as music director, P. M. Satheesh as sound designer, and Gokuldas as art director. While describing the film, Menon said: "one could say Odiyans are the first quotation gangs in Kerala. They went in disguise of animals during night hours to attack their enemies. The movie is rooted on this tribes and their myth, something like magical realism". He said Odiyan is likely to release in 2017, but is uncertain as the film has to be shot at night and demands an extensive VFX work, which decides the post-production time. Filming was then scheduled to begin on 25 May 2017.[4]

Later, Prasanth Madhav replaced Gokuldas as art director and Johnkutty replaced Prasad as editor.[5] NY VFXWAALA was hired for visual effects. According to Shrikumar, the film is a magical realism thriller.[6]

Character looks

The first-look motion poster of the film featuring the concept art of a younger Odiyan Manikyan was released earlier. He filmed the scenes of 65-year old Manikyan in the film's earlier schedules.

For achieving the character look of the younger Manikyan, Mohanlal had to lose weight. He underwent physical training under a 25-member expert team from France.[7] In the 51-day long training session, Mohanlal lost 18 kilograms (40 lb) body weight.[8] A teaser featuring his younger look was released on 13 December 2017.[9] It received positive response, Mohanlal's effort for the transformation was praised by media outlets and people from film industry.[10][11][12]

Filming

Principal photography commenced on 25 August at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.[13] Mohanlal joined the sets on 28 August.[14] The other locations are Palakkad, Tazrak, Udumalaipettai, Pollachi, and Hyderabad. The 12 minutes long climax sequence took 25 days to finish filming. The action choreography was done by Peter Heiin

Final schedule began in 2018 March with Mohanlal in the young look which ended in late April.

Music

The songs featured in the film is composed by M. Jayachandran while the lyrics are written by Rafeeq Ahamed and Lakshmi Sreekumar. Shreya Ghoshal has rendered a song to the film. In November 2017, it was confirmed that Sam C. S. will compose the film score, which will be his debut in Malayalam.[15]
