Normani Kordei Hamilton (born May 31, 1996),[1] recording mononymously as Normani,[2][3] is an American singer and dancer, best known as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which was formed on the second season of The X Factor US in 2012. In 2017, she was a contestant in season 24 of Dancing with the Stars.[4] Her first single as a soloist, the duet "Love Lies" with singer Khalid recorded for the soundtrack of the movie Love, Simon, reached number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100. She is currently working on her debut solo album.

Early life

Normani was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in New Orleans, and is the daughter of Derrick and Andrea Hamilton.[5] She has two older half sisters. She and her family relocated to Houston, Texas, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.[6] At a young age, Normani competed in dance, gymnastics and beauty pageants.[5] She performed gospel music as a child, and recorded her first song at age 13.[5]

Normani has listed 1990s R&B music,[7] Aaliyah,[8] Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé,[9] Jennifer Hudson,[10] Missy Elliott,[11] and Lauryn Hill[12] as influences.

Career

The X Factor and Fifth Harmony

Normani auditioned on the second season of The X Factor USA in 2012 with "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin.[13] She advanced to the next round after getting all four approval yeses from the judges. It was during the second round of boot camp that led to her elimination.[14] That marked the end of Normani's X Factor participation as a solo artist. However, she was brought back to the show and put into a group with four other girls, Ally Brooke, Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, and Camila Cabello, who would later become Fifth Harmony.[15] At the end of the show's season, the group managed to make it to the finale and finished in third place.[16]

In October 2013, Fifth Harmony released their first EP, Better Together. Subsequently, the group released their debut album, Reflection (2015), and their second album, 7/27 (2016), which spawned singles such as "Worth It" and "Work from Home", respectively.[15] On August 25, 2017, Fifth Harmony released their self-titled album, their first as a quartet.[17] On March 19, 2018 the group announced their decision to take an indefinite hiatus to pursue solo careers.[18]

Solo projects

In 2015, Normani released two dance videos performing "Commas" and "Do Not Disturb" with Fifth Harmony's choreographer Sean Bankhead on her YouTube channel.[19] As of December 2017, she has released three cover-mashups (of Drake's "Fake Love"/"Sneakin'", Solange's "Cranes in the Sky"/"Don't Touch My Hair" and Tory Lanez's "Say It") with the help of the producers The Invaders.[20]

Normani competed on season 24 of Dancing with the Stars. Her partner was professional ballroom dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy.[21] The team reached the finals and finished in third place.[22]

Normani was featured as a cameo in R&B singer Khalid's music video "Young Dumb & Broke", and confirmed they were working on "new song ideas".[23][24] On October 21, 2017 it was announced that Normani had signed to management company S10 Entertainment as a solo artist.[25][26] She also signed her own solo publishing deal to Stellar Songs as a songwriter,[27] and a modeling contract with Wilhelmina.[28] On February 14, 2018, Normani released a song with Khalid called "Love Lies" for the soundtrack of the movie, Love, Simon.[29][2] The single debuted at 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100, thus scoring the highest first-week position for a debut single by a girl group member.[30] It later reached a peak of 9 on the chart,[31] and topped the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart.[32] In April 2018, it was announced that Normani had signed to Keep Cool/RCA Records for her solo debut studio album.[33][34] Normani confirmed she is working on an upcoming music collaboration with Missy Elliott.[35] Billboard confirmed she is also collaborating with Calvin Harris[36] and Kehlani.[37]

Philanthropy

Along with Fifth Harmony, Normani has been involved with many charities like Girl Scouts of America and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.[38][39] In September 2016, Normani was named the Diversity Ambassador for The Cybersmile Foundation, an international non-profit organization providing support for victims of cyberbullying and online hate campaigns, after being racially abused online.[40] On January 26, 2017, Normani was named as the first official celebrity ambassador for the annual Stars & Strikes Celebrity Bowling Event & Tournament hosted by the non-profit organization A Place Called Home.[41] On February 24, 2017, it was announced that Normani partnered with American Cancer Society as a global ambassador to help increase awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and HPV vaccination.[42][43]
