Nooran Sisters

The Nooran SistersJyoti Nooran and Sultana Nooran – are a Sufi singing duo from Sham Chaurasia gharana of classical music. They are Sufi singers from Jalandhar.[1]

Early life

The sisters were trained for 10 years by their father, Ustad Gulshan Mir, who is the son of Bibi Nooran/Swarn Noora, a renowned Sufi singer of the 70's. Music was an integral part of their childhood because of their grandmother, Swarn Noora. As per their father, the family fell on very hard times after Swarn Noora died. It was very difficult to even arrange food.[2] To survive, he used to give music lessons. Although it took away him from Mir's music, it helped his family to pass the bad times. When Sultana was seven and Jyoti were five, he discovered their talent of singing and contacted Music Director Kuljit Singh and the first song recorded by them was 'Kulli' under his music direction. "They were playing, and in jest, singing a Bulleh Shah kalam they had heard from their grandmother, Bibi Nooran." As per Mir, they didn't miss any beat and sang professionally with tabla and harmonium. Iqbal Mahal, a Canadian music promoter, discovered the sisters in 2010. He plays a big role in their current success.[3] Then they performed at Baba Murad Shah Dargah, Nakodar, Punjab. Their Song Allah Hoo was an instant hit on YouTube. After that more of their songs like "Tera Rab Ton vee Vadh Ke Deedar" and "Mein Keenu Keenu Dassan" played an important role in providing the duo popularity.

Career

They performed on the occasion of the 72nd birthday of late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh at Harpal Tiwana Center of Performing Arts (HTCPA), where the sisters left Patiala, Punjab, India residents spellbound with their talent. They shot to fame with the MTV Talent hunt series in India MTV Sound Trippin, with their song "Tung Tung", and later, with MTV Unplugged series and Coke Studio.

Bollywood

They got their first break in Bollywood with the movie Highway in 2014, with the music director A.R Rahman. After that they also sang in movies like Sultan, Mirzya, Dangal and Jab Harry met Sejal.
