Noah Purcell is the current Solicitor General of the State of Washington, United States. He, alongside Bob Ferguson (Attorney General of Washington State) and Governor Jay Inslee played a major role in litigating Donald Trump's executive order that restricted travel to the United States from seven Muslim majority countries through a court case headed by Judge James Robart.[1][2]

Early life and career

Purcell is a graduate of Seattle's Franklin High School. He graduated from the University of Washington in 2002, and subsequently earned a J. D. from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.[3][4] After graduation from Harvard Law, Purcell clerked for former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court David Souter and D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge David Tatel.[5] Souter, who served as the Attorney General of New Hampshire from 1976 to 1978, stated that "Noah was a terrific law clerk, and he'll be a terrific Solicitor General."

From 2009 to 2010, Purcell worked in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He worked to uphold Arizona's immigration law that was put in place during the administration of then-Governor Jan Brewer. Additionally, prior to being appointed to the office of the Solicitor General, he worked as a private attorney in Perkins Coie's Litigation and Appellate practices. His extensive experience and knowledge as a litigator includes constitutional issues, campaign financing and environmental and administrative law, among others.
