Adam John Grandmaison (born November 24, 1983), also known as Adam22, is an American podcast host, entertainer, YouTube personality, and the founder of the video blog and interview podcast "No Jumper".[3][4][5]

Early life

Grandmaison was raised in Nashua, New Hampshire and was influenced at an early age by the rapper Snoop Dogg, specifically the 1993 album Doggystyle. Before founding his website, "The Come Up," Grandmaison played professional poker online.[6]

Career

In 2006, Grandmaison started the website, "The Come Up," which became one of the most popular BMX websites of all time.[7] Later, Grandmaison created OnSomeShit, a BMX biking team and BMX-based clothing line which has a retail store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.[3][8]

Grandmaison hosted the inaugural Trap Circus music festival in Miami, Florida in 2017.[5][9]

No Jumper

No Jumper originally started as a blog on Tumblr, started by George Potter in 2011 and financed by Grandmaison who was a prolific BMX biker.[10] The blog reviewed early underground artists such as Spaceghostpurrp, Clams Casino and reviewed obscure Gucci Mane mixtapes, treating the underground with "critical attention."[11]

Revived in 2015, Grandmaison's "No Jumper" podcast, hosted on YouTube, focuses on interviews with underground rap artists and tastemakers.[12] As of March 2017, the interviews received approximately 500,000 to 1 million views each.[3] No Jumper originally started as a BMX podcast with vlogs dedicated to Grandmaison's life running OnSomeShit's retail store before Memphis rapper and well known underground rap figure Xavier Wulf was interviewed by Grandmaison, with the interview soon turning viral within hip-hop communities, sparking Grandmaison's newfound interest in interviewing known figures within both underground and mainstream hip-hop.[13]

Grandmaison, through his "No Jumper" podcast, has been noted for interviewing up-and-coming talent as well as his extensive interviews with established rappers, and has interviewed Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, Ugly God, 6ix9ine, Suicideboys, Action Bronson and most famously XXXTentacion with his interview gaining over 8 million views.[8][1] Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg has said he views Grandmaison, "as an advance scout searching for combustible new talent," while Rolling Stone has described him as “underground hip-hop’s major tastemaker.”[1][14] An April 2016 episode of "No Jumper" featuring Grandmaison's interview with then-underground XXXTentacion, in his first official professional interview, has been credited with giving the Florida rapper exposure to a wide audience.[15][16]

The "No Jumper" YouTube channel has over 200 million total video views and 1 million subscribers as of February 2018. Jon Caramanica of the New York Times described "No Jumper" as "The Paris Review for the face-tattoo set."[17]

On June 20, 2018, Grandmaison held a memorial event for XXXTentacion, who was murdered two days prior, in front of his OnSomeShit store to a crowd of 300 people.[18] The crowd eventually grew to over 1,000 and police in riot gear eventually appeared with police en route to disperse the crowd.[19] According to reports, rubber bullets were shot and tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.[20]

Grandmaison was one of the promoters for YouTube personality Fouseytube's event, “Hate Dies, Love Arrives” which was shut down via a bomb threat which left 1,500 people evacuated.[21] Shortly after the event, Grandmaison interviewed Shane Dawson and mid-interview, FouseyTube, and numerous other YouTube personalities who were at the interview interrupted, causing the Shane Dawson interview to go viral.[22]

Personal life

Grandmaison is in a relationship with vlogger and YouTube personality Lena Nersesian (Lena the Plug).[23]

Controversy

On March 12 2014, Grandmaison faced significant public backlash after posting a controversial video to his Facebook of BMX riders whom were known to frequent his bike shop OSS (On Some Shit). The video depicted said BMX riders bunny hopping over what seemed to be unsuspecting homeless people in and around the "skid row" area of down town LA.

Local news got a hold of the video[24] of which they published a piece where they asked locals if they had seen the clip, and where their opinions about it's existence on social media. The reporter confronted Grandmaison at his shop to get his side of the story and whether he planned on taking the video down from his public Facebook which he refused. Though he did state during the interview that he did not condone the actions depicted in the video in question.

In the spring of 2018, allegations of Grandmaison committing sexual assault against women and female minors was reported on by multiple music news outlets and blogs.[25][26][27] Grandmaison denied the claims in a statement on Twitter[28] and in an interview with DJ Akademiks [29]

Grandmaison was criticized on social media on July 5, 2018 following comments on unpaid internships, saying "If you’re complaining about unpaid internships I am 100% sure you aren’t ever gonna make it."[30] Publications such as Daily Dot criticized Grandmaison on his views, citing previous tweets where he expressed admiration for paid internships and publications such as Fortune supported Grandmaison's views.[31]

On July 24, 2018, rapper and social media personality, Boonk Gang, was interviewed by Grandmaison on his No Jumper Podcast. During the interview, Boonk Gang slurred his words and passed out before puking everywhere to the distaste of Grandmaison.[13][32] Boonk Gang later defended his actions, saying that he was intoxicated on alcohol for "three weeks straight" and that he had taken drugs just before the interview.[33]

Allegedly, Adam22 also appeared on Power 106 Los Angeles to talk about getting jumped by Russ' crew. Adam spoke out on Russ after the rapper had also been reported to have had goons assault Smokepurpp at Splash! Festival.
