Club career
Southend United
Cotton first appeared in Southend United's first-team squad during the 2015–16 campaign and was assigned the number 36 jersey. Later on that season, he signed his first professional contract.[1] Following limited first-team opportunities, Cotton joined Isthmian League Premier Division side Lowestoft Town in February 2017 on a one-month loan.[2] On the same day, he made his debut during their 1–0 home defeat against Metropolitan Police, featuring for 89 minutes before being replaced by Jamie Forshaw.[3] Cotton went onto appear fourteen more times for Lowestoft, scoring five goals before returning to Southend.[4]
Following a two-year wait, Cotton made his Southend first-team debut during their EFL Trophy group-stage tie against Reading U23s, featuring for 17 minutes during the 1–0 victory.[5] A month later, Cotton returned to Isthmian League side Lowestoft for a further loan spell.[6] During his three-month spell, Cotton scored just once in five appearances, before returning in January 2018.
On 9 May 2018, it was announced that Cotton would be leaving Southend at the end of his contract in June.[7]
