Naciye Hanım[a] (Ottoman Turkish: ناجیه خانم; c. 1882 – 4 December 1924) was the thirteenth,[2] and last wife of Sultan Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire.[3]
Early life
Naciye Hanım was born in 1882[4] in Yukarı Ihsaniye, Bartın. Born as Zeliha Ankuap, she was the daughter of Aslan Bey Ankuap (died 1916),[5] and Canhiz Hanım. She had one sister Asiye Hanım.[6]
In 1901, Kabasakal Mehmed Pasha, presented her for service in the Yıldız Palace,[7][8] where her name according to the custom of the Ottoman court was changed to Saliha.[9]
Marriage
Three years into service, Abdul Hamid took notice of Saliha, and they married on 4 November 1904 in the Yıldız Palace.[10] She was renamed Naciye,[9] and was given the title of "Altıncı Ikbal".[2]
A year after the marriage, on 17 September 1905, she gave birth to her first child, a son, Şehzade Mehmed Abid,[11] and three years later on 16 January 1909 to her second child, a daughter, Samiye Sultan, who died on 24 January 1909.[12] Soon after, Naciye was given the title of "Beşinci Ikbal".[2]
In the 1909 mutiny, Kabasakal ("twisted beard") was shaved and publicly hanged,[13] and on 27 April 1909, Abdul Hamid was deposed, and sent into exile in Salonica.[14] Naciye was close to him.[15] She and her son Abid accompanied him. But after Salonica fell to Greece in 1912, she returned back to Istanbul with Abdul Hamid, and settled in the Beylerbeyi Palace,[2][16][17] where he died in 1918.[18]
Death
After Abdul Hamid's death, Naciye settled in a mansion at Erenköy, where she died on 4 December 1924.[10][16] She was buried in the mausoleum of Sultan Mahmud II, located at Divan Yolu street.[2]
In popular culture
Naciye Hanım is a character in Tim Symonds' historical novel Sherlock Holmes and The Sword of Osman (2015).[19]
