CD maxi – remixes

"Mr. Vain" is a song by the German music group Culture Beat. The song was released in April 1993 as the lead single from their second album Serenity (1993). "Mr. Vain" achieved huge success worldwide, reaching number one in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Background and commercial performance

Written by Steven Levis, Nosie Katzmann and Jay Supreme, and produced by Torsten Fenslau, "Mr. Vain" was the best-selling single across Europe of 1993. The song first broke in Germany before breaking more widely through the summer, eventually topping the chart in 12 countries. It reached number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Gold certification. "Mr. Vain" also peaked at number two for two weeks on the Billboard Dance Club Songs.[3] Tania Evans is the female singer on "Mr. Vain", and the rapper is Jay Supreme.

It first entered the charts in the United Kingdom in late July 1993 at number 24 climbing to number one for the week ending 28 August 1993. At times it was selling twice as much its nearest challenger "It Keeps Rainin'" by Bitty McLean during its 4-week reign at the top.[4] It spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart and stayed at the top for four weeks. "Mr. Vain" was the ninth best selling single of 1993 and 51% of its sales that year were on cassette. It sold over 442,000 copies in the UK.[5]

"Mr. Vain" is notable in the United Kingdom as it was the first number-one single not to be available as a 7" single since the 1950s and heralded the demise of the 7" single as a mass market medium.

Impact and legacy

In 2011 MTV Dance ranked "Mr. Vain" at number 65 in their list of The 100 Biggest 90's Dance Anthems of All Time.[6]. And in 2017 BuzzFeed listed the song number 17 in their The 101 Greatest Dance Songs Of the '90s list.[7]
