Moovit is an urban mobility data analytics company and free public transit app.

History

The company, originally called Tranzmate, was founded in 2012 by developers Nir Erez, Roy Bick, and Yaron Evron in Israel. Uri Levine, Founder and Former President of Waze, is a board member.[2]

In 2012, the company raised $3.5 million in its first round of funding from Gemini Funds and BRM Capital.[3] In Q2 of 2012 the company launched Beta, and by Q4 launched worldwide. In 2013, Moovit received Venture-capital backing of $28 million from Sequoia Capital, BRM Group, Gemini Funds.[4]

In March 2014, Moovit became the first provider to create transit data for areas in which no data is officially available (or where local transit agencies do not offer it to app developers) by creating a "community editor" and allowing volunteer editors to generate schedule and map data.[5]

In Q1 of January 2015, the company raised its $50 million Series-C round from Bernard Arnault, BMW i Ventures, BRM Capital, JV, Gemini Partners, Keolis, NGP Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Vaizra Partners.[6] In November 2015, Moovit received funding from Sound Ventures.[7]

Moovit raised $50 million in its Series D financing in February 2018, which brought Moovit’s funding to $131.5 million.[8][9]

The company has had several sporting partnerships of note. Moovit was chosen as the official mobility partner for the City of Rio during the 2016 Olympic Games[10] and it collaborated with the UEFA Fan App for Euro 2016[11] to help fans and athletes have a smoother journey to the games. In 2018, Moovit was also chosen as the official mobility app of Italian football team AS Roma[12] and the Asian Games[13].

Product

Moovit offers a real-time journey planner mobile and web app to navigate public transit networks with GPS navigation across transit modes, including buses, ferries, rapid transit (metro/subway/underground, etc), trains, trams, and trolleybuses. Users can access a live map, and view nearby stops and stations based on their current GPS location, as well as plan trips across transportation modes based on real-time data.[14] The application differs from traditional public transit applications as it is community-driven and integrates official public transit data from transit operators with real-time data collected from users via crowdsourcing.[15] Moovit’s network of more than 450,000 local editors called “Mooviters” help map and maintain local transit information in cities that would otherwise be unserved by alternative navigation apps. Mooviters account for 65 percent of the hundreds of cities Moovit opens every year.

Users can passively and anonymously transmit their speed and location data to Moovit. Moovit then integrates this crowdsourced data with public transit schedules to improve trip plan results based on current conditions, and share this data with the user community.[16] In addition to passively sharing data, users can actively send reports including reasons for delays, overcrowding, satisfaction with their bus driver, and wifi availability.[17]

Moovit is available in more than 2,600 cities across 83 countries around the world and available in 44 languages.[18]
