Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte (born May 2, 1983), better known by her stage name Mon Laferte, is a Chilean singer-songwriter and actress.

Early life and education

Laferte was born in Viña del Mar. She mixed her musical styles with rock, blues, pop, bolero, and electronic. She started her career at the age of 9, after winning a guitar in a singing contest[1]. She entered a musical conservatory in Viña del Mar, Chile at the age of 13.[2] Soon after, she began playing in bars in Valparaíso and Santiago.

Career

In 2003, she released her first studio album named La Chica de Rojo. In 2009, Laferte was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.[3] But two years later, she recorded her second album under her stage name Mon Laferte, titled Desechable. The next year, she was invited to judge the second season of the Chilean version of The X Factor, called Factor X, along with Karen Doggenweiler, Tito Beltrán and José Luis Rodríguez.

In 2007, Mon Laferte decided to start a new chapter in her musical career by moving to Mexico City from Chile, where she began a new project with her own songs and music, obtaining a successful career in Mexico and popularity throughout South America.

In 2013, she released her third album named Tornasol. In 2015, she released her fourth album named Mon Laferte, Vol.1 where she obtained the attention of the media with her single "Tu falta de querer", and then winning an award on MTV Millennial Awards in 2016 as the "Latin Video of the Year"[4] and receiving for her first time, two nominations on the Latin Grammy Awards of 2016 as "Best New Artist" and "Best Alternative Music Album". In 2017, she released her fifth album named La Trenza, her most acclaimed album to date. Her single "Amárrame" won the "Best Alternative Song" on the 18th Latin GRAMMYs celebrated in 2017[5], in which she was nominated to "Best Alternative Music Album", "Song of the Year", "Album of the Year" and "Record of the Year" on the same ceremony.[6]

In October 2013, Laferte became a vegetarian because of ethical reasons. As of 2017, she is a vegan.[7][8][9]

In June 2018, she co-hosted the 2018 MTV Millennial Awards in Mexico City at the Mexico City Arena along with the Venezuelan youtuber La Divaza.[10]
