Minor Hotels is an international hotel owner, operator and investor currently with 161 hotels in operation in 26 countries across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Europe and South America[1]. The hotel group operates as a subsidiary of Minor International PCL,[2] one of the largest hospitality and leisure companies in the Asia Pacific region.[3] The group operates hotels under the brands of Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas, AVANI Hotels & Resorts, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts, Oaks Hotels & Resorts, Elewana Collection, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, St. Regis, and Minor International.

History

US-born businessman William Heinecke[4] founded the group in 1978 with opening of the Royal Garden Resort in Pattaya (later rebranded as the Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa). Royal Garden Resorts was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1988.

The first property of the group's brand, Anantara Hotels, Resorts, & Spas, opened in the Thai seaside town of Hua Hin in 2001.

When the brand celebrated its 15th anniversary on 4 March 2016, it had 35 hotels and resorts across Asia, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and Africa.[5] (22)

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas

Anantara was born in 2001 with the first luxury property in Thailand's seaside town of Hua Hin. Today's portfolio spans Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Maldives, Mozambique, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and Zambia.[6] Anantara Thailand formerly hosted the annual King's Cup Elephant Polo tournament, the subject of some controversy.[7][8] The Thailand Elephant Polo Association announced in October 2018 that it will end polo matches in Thailand. A polo tournament had been held annually at Anantara Hotel Bangkok.[9]

AVANI Hotels & Resorts

The sister brand of Anantara, AVANI Hotels & Resorts, was launched in 2012, and owns 23 properties in Botswana, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Zambia, the United Arab Emirates and Portugal.

Oaks Hotels & Resorts

In July 2011, Minor Hotels acquired a stake of 34.4 percent of Oaks Hotels and Resorts, Ltd.[10] Oaks is one of Australia's largest self-contained accommodation providers.[11] Minor Hotels controls 54 percent of the Australian-based chain.

Tivoli Hotels & Resorts

In 2016,[12] Portugal saw its largest ever hotel deal when Minor Hotel Group acquired Tivoli Hotels & Resorts[13] a hotel chain that owns 13 properties across Portugal and Brazil.[14] The acquisition, which marked MHG's entry into Europe and Latin America, totaled €294.2 million.[15]

Elewana Collection

In 2015, Minor Hotels joined with African luxury lodge and camp chain, Elewana Collection, to add six camps in Kenya to its portfolio.[16]. The additions are the result of the acquisition of the Cheli and Peacock group of companies by the Elewana Collection.

Minor Hotels' portfolio includes six in-house hotels[17] and partnerships with other leading hotel brands.[18]
