Micheál Donoghue (born September 1974) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He has been the manager of the Galway senior team since December 2015.[1]

Born in Clarinbridge, County Galway, Donoghue first played competitive hurling at juvenile and underage levels with the Clarinbridge club. After winning a county minor championship medal in 1992, he later joined the club's senior team. Donoghue captained the team to Connacht and county senior championship titles in 2001.

Donoghue made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Galway minor team. An All-Ireland medal winner in 1992, he later joined the Galway under-21 team and winning an All-Ireland medal in that grade in 1993. Donoghue made his senior debut during the 1993-94 league. In a brief senior career he won two Connacht medals and one National Hurling League medal. He played his last game for Galway in August 1996. Donoghue's twin brother Liam also played with Galway.

As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Donoghue won a Railway Cup medal in 1994.

In retirement from playing Donoghue became involved in team management and coaching. He was a selector with the Railway Cup-winning Connacht team in 2004, before serving as a selector on the Galway under-21 team that won All-Ireland titles in 2005 and 2007. At club level Donoghue managed Clarinbridge to the All-Ireland title in 2011, before later taking charge of Turloughmore. After a two-year stint working as a statistician with the Tipperary senior team, Donoghue was appointed manager of the Galway senior team in December 2015. Since then he has guided the team to All-Ireland, Leinster and National League titles.

Playing career

Donoghue played on the 1992 All-Ireland Minor and 1993 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship winning sides and made his senior debut for Galway in 1993 in the 1993–94 National Hurling League. A broken collarbone and back operation kept him out of action for a year before he played championship hurling in 1996. He captained Clarinbridge to the Galway Senior Hurling Championship in 2001.[2]

Management career

He was involved with the Galway Under 21 hurling team that won the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship in 2005 and 2007. Donoghue became Clarinbridge manager in 2010, guiding them to their second ever county title defeating Loughrea in the 2010 final and going on to win the 2011 All Ireland Club title beating O'Loughlin Gaels.

He became involved with Tipperary's backroom team as a statistics man from 2014 to 2015.

In December 2015 Donoghue succeeded Anthony Cunningham as Galway manager starting in the 2016 Season.[3]

On 3 April 2016, Galway lost to Cork in a Division 1A Relegation Play-Off by 2-22 to 0-25 and were relegated to Division 1B for 2017.[4] On 3 July 2016, Galway lost the Leinster Final to Kilkenny on a 0-22 to 1-26 scoreline after having a three-point lead at half-time.[5][6]

On 22 April 2017, Galway won the 2017 National Hurling League after a 3-21 to 0-14 win against Tipperary in the final.[7][8] On 2 July 2017, Galway won their second ever Leinster Senior Hurling title after a 0-29 to 1-17 win against Wexford in the final.[9] On 6 August 2017, Galway qualified for the 2017 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final after a one-point victory over Tipperary in the semi-final. On 3 September 2017, Donoghue and his Galway team were crowned All Ireland Champions after defeating Waterford on a 0-26 to 2-17 scoreline in the final. This was Galway's first All Ireland senior hurling title since 1988.[10][11][12]
