Michael Moriarty (born in Dublin, Ireland, on 8 March 1954) is General Secretary of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), the representative body at both national and European level for Ireland’s 16 statutory regional Education and Training Boards (ETBs). He has been involved at the highest level of Irish education and training for twenty years, having been appointed General Secretary of ETBI’s predecessor, the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA), in 1997.

Career

Since 2013,[1] Moriarty has steered a major restructuring of the Further Education and Training (FET) sector in Ireland, when, as a result of the Education and Training Boards Act 2013,[2] IVEA was renamed Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) and IVEA’s 33 member Vocational Education Committees (VECs) were amalgamated into 16 statutory regional Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and assumed the functions of FÁS, the now defunct training authority.

Moriarty has been President of the European Federation of Education Employers (EFEE) since 2014. ETBI was a founder member of EFEE which includes education employer organisations from across the EU/EFTA countries. EFEE is a partner with ETUCE, the European Trade Union Committee for Education, in the European Sectoral Social Dialogue body for Education (ESSDE)],[3] which is consulted by the European Commission on education policy and initiatives.

Moriarty was active in the formation of the Association of Independent Radio Stations (now Independent Broadcasters of Ireland) and served on its board for a number of years. He is a former President of the County Carlow Chamber of Commerce, and a current member of the executive committee of the County Kildare Chamber. He served on the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland from 2010–2015 and was also a board member of FÁS, the former national training authority, prior to its dissolution in 2013.

Awards and recognition

Moriarty received the Waterford Crystal Quality of Life Award in the Southeast Region in 1989 for his work in the community. In 2016, he was awarded the international Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life award,[4] in recognition of his lifelong commitment to education and his leadership in education, training and structural reform.
