Melancholy (Nepali: मिलानकोली) is an environmental song by 365 Nepali artists.[1] This song is intended to send an environmental message by breaking the Guinness World Records for "Most Vocal Solos in a Song Recording" is conceptualized, written, music composed and directed by environmentalist Nipesh DHAKA.[2][3] The song was recorded in a single on 19 May 2016, inaugurated by prime minister Khadga Prasad Oli at 8 am and continued record till 6 Pm of the evening in 26 different individual groups, was released on 2 September 2017 by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at Army Officer's Club, Kathmandu.[4][5]
Background and Conceptualized
Campaigner Nipesh DHAKA had been involved music in 1998. He recorded 7 more songs and releases an album ‘L’Hospital’ in 2005 which was launched by Asian Music. After his first graduation in mathematics (2005) from Tribhuvan University, he taught schools and colleges as a math teacher and lecturer. In 2008, he planned for second graduation in Sustainable Resources Management for which he moved to Germany and joined Technical University of Munich.He studied Landscape Management and Soil & Water Management as an elective. He had keen desire to work in Nepal. He wanted to conduct research in biodiversity, natural resource, culture and raise livelihood of Nepali people. Therefore, he returned Nepal in 2013. After his arrival in Nepal, he practically involved in varieties of research based campaigns for his motto. During this research, he scripted and filmed all the scenarios and presented different documentaries and song such as; Himalaya Calls (2015), Melancholy (Documentary, 2017), Rodhan (The Pain, 2018: Unpublished). For which he has been visiting more than 65 districts in different geographical and ecological variations. He studied about the impact of natural resources in various communities in their social, ethnic, cultural and human rights concerns.[6] He also recorded a song by 206 Nepali Artists in different studios of Nepal and Mumbai. He recorded the song in various legendarily artists like Udit Narayan Jha,Madan Krishna Shrestha, Hari Bansha Acharya, Prem Dhoj Pradhan, Vijaya Lama, Dr.Bhola Rijal, Sambhujeet Baskota, Rajesh Payal Rai and so on. At that time he conceptualized the Melancholy which song had been recorded in a single day where 150 previous artists were arrived and more 215 artists, total 365 artists came together and Sang together in a single day. The most interesting thing is that it was the historical event in which such a large numbers of artists were gathered together to record their voice in a song not only in Nepal but also the world.[7]
The slogan of the song is "Raise Voice Save Earth". The event was conducted primarily to break Guinness World Records entitle “Most Vocal Solos in a Song Recording” and secondarily to aware people for environmental conservation and protection.Therefore, he invited 365 Nepali singer and musicians along with National Poet Madhav Prasad Ghimire for recording environmental song (33:49) in Radio Nepal Singha Dharbar, Kathamandu.[8] The song was recorded by Sr. recordist Prakash Kharel. On 1 February 2018 the song has been certified in Guinness World Records.[9]
