Martin Malavé Dilan (born September 12, 1950) is a member of the New York State Senate representing the 18th District. The 18th Senate District encompasses the northern Brooklyn communities of Bushwick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Cypress Hills, City-Line, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville.
Early life and education
Dilan is the son of Esther and Gilberto Dilan, who migrated from Puerto Rico in 1947. He grew up in the community of Bushwick, and first involved himself in electoral politics in high school in 1965, when he worked as a volunteer in a mayoral campaign. He received a Special Baccalaureate Degree from Brooklyn College.
Career
Dilan is a former legilative assistant for the U.S. House of Representatives and has served as a Democratic District Leader and Democratic State Committeeman from the 54th Assembly District. He has been elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Dilan served 14 years as a member of Community School Board 32, including seven as Chair, and advocated for new school construction.
Dilan served ten years as a member of the New York City Council. During his tenure in the Council he wrote a law to penalize anyone found guilty of illegal dumping. As Chair of the City Council's Standards and Ethics Committee, Dilan advocated for greater access to information about conflict of interest issues among elected officials and government employees.
In 2002, Dilan was elected to the State Senate. In 2007, Dilan was appointed Chairman of the Minority Conference, and in 2009 Senior Assistant Majority Leader.
Dilan received a score of 60 in Environmental Advocates' 2009 Voters' Guide.[1] His 2008 score was 83.[2]
On September 13, 2018, Dilan was defeated by Julia Salazar, a 27 year-old democratic socialist who ran an insurgent campaign against him.[3] Dilan was defeated alongside six former members of the Independent Democratic Conference.
