Marina Kats (born July 4, 1961) is an attorney based in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.[1] A native of Kiev, Ukraine, Kats received her Juris Doctorate from the Beasley School of Law.[1] In 2008, she ran for United States Congress as a member of the Republican Party.[2] She is the founder and owner of Kats, Jamison, & Associates.[3]

Early life, education and career

At age 17, Kats immigrated to the United States from Ukraine and did not speak any English.[4] Kats went to work to get through college. She worked in grocery stores, waited tables, scooped ice cream, and was a dental assistant.[5][6]

She graduated from Temple University in 1985 with a bachelors in Business Administration and received her Juris Doctorate in 1988 from the Beasley School of Law,[7] and later returned to earn a master's degree in 1995, becoming one of a handful of women nationally to receive the master of laws (LLM) in trial advocacy.[4] She is a member of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C. bar associations.[8][9][10]

Kats founded Kats, Jamison & Associates in 1995, and has obtained several seven-figure awards for its clients, successfully represented clients before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and secured pardons for its criminal clients from the Pennsylvania governor.[11] Kats sits on the board of directors for Einstein Medical Center and has dedicated Philadelphia Einstein Center One's lobby in honor of her parents Roman & Nelya Kats.[12] Kats serves on the Board of Visitors for the Beasley School of Law[13] and the Temple University Leadership Council, and is an active member of the Temple Law Alumni Association[1] and a charter member of the Law School’s Centennial Society.[6][14] In 2012, Kats was elected to the board of trustees to the Foreign Policy Research Institute.[15][16] In 2017, Kats became the President of the Eurasian-American Chamber of Commerce.[17]

United States House of Representatives elections in Pennsylvania, 2008

Kats ran for congress in Pennsylvania's 13th congressional district in 2008 against Allyson Schwartz[18] trying to unseat the two-term incumbent Schwartz (D).[19] Prior to February 2018, the district was located in southeastern Pennsylvania, covering eastern Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia. The district traditionally included most of Montgomery County, but was redrawn in 2002 to include part of Philadelphia, and altered again in 2012.[20] Had she won, Kats would have become the first person born in the former Soviet Union elected to Congress.[21]
