Madison Township is one of the eighteen townships of Richland County, Ohio, United States. It is a part of the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 2000 census found 14,680 people in the township.[3]

Geography

Madison Township is centered at 40°47'22" North, 82°28'36" West (40.789444, -82.476666).[4]

Most of Madison Township is occupied by the city of Mansfield, the county seat of Richland County.

Name and history

It is one of twenty Madison Townships statewide.[5]

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[6] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.

Education

Madison Local Schools enroll 3,218 students as of 2012-2013.[7] The district operates 6 public schools including four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Also located in the school district is the Madison Adult Career Center (formerly Madison Adult Education). The adult education facility is located at Madison Comprehensive High School.

Emergency services

Law enforcement in Madison Township is the responsibility of the Richland County Sheriff's Office,[8] and fire protection and ambulance services are provided by the Madison Township Fire Department.[9]
