The Lux Style Awards is the largest award ceremony held annually in Pakistan since 2002.[1] The awards celebrate "style" in the Pakistani entertainment industry.[2] Around 30 awards are given annually.[1] The ceremony is the oldest and the most prominent film event dedicated to Pakistani television, fashion and film industry in Pakistan. The awards are voted on by both the public and a committee of experts.[3]
As one of the nation's premiere award shows, it is held in high regard"[1][4] and described as "the awards ceremony in Pakistan".[5]
History
The Lux Style Awards were created as the "Oscars of Pakistan". The awards were created and masterminded by Naheed Chowdhry who headed the Unilever Lux team at the time. Naheed worked in collaboration with Frieha Altaf, a TV and event producer.
The Unilever leadership team and key film, fashion and art industry leaders (who formed the first Judges' Panel) collectively agreed the categories for the Awards. A final category was added on - People's Choice, to engage both audiences viewing the show and provide a scholarship at a top art school of choice for upcoming artists/students who showed exceptional promise.
The Awards were the first of their kind, and reached a viewership of 90+MM in Pakistan alone. The campaign included media such as TV advertisements, Radio, PR, Brand Activation (Voting) through a mail-in competition, etc.
The first awards were presented in 2002 at the Naval Base in Karachi, Pakistan due to heightened security and high-profile attendance. The Awards Ceremony was preceded by 7 days of exhibitions and fashion shows at different smaller venues throughout Karachi and on Manora (island off Karachi), as a buildup to the final Show. Since 2002 the event has been condensed to a three-day celebration, hosting various events and activities relating to the Pakistan film industry.Lux Style Awards have no balance of categories. For example,LSA has no categories of "Best Television Supporting Actor" and "Best Television Supporting Actress" in Television . On the other hand, there are categories for film supporting performers in LSA.Any South Asian film is not made without music and there is no category of "Best Film Music" in LSA.There is category of "Best Television Writer", but category "Best Film Writer" is not present.
