Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention

The Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention was a movement by African American Baptists from the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. who wanted to see more missions to Africa in the 1890s. The group eventually separated from the 'Mother Church' in 1897 due disputes concerning the mission board, and also due to greater cooperation with White Baptists.

Lott Carey was born a slave but became the first American Missionary to Africa. While in Liberia engaging in evangelism and education, Carey established the First Baptist Church of Liberia, called the Providence Baptist Church of Monrovia.[1]
