Livermore Municipal Airport (IATA: LVK, ICAO: KLVK) is a public use airport located 3 miles (4.8 km) west of the central business district of Livermore, California, a city, in Alameda County, California, United States, east of the San Francisco Bay area.[1] It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a regional reliver facility.[2]

The airport does not have scheduled airline service, the closest airport with scheduled airline service is Oakland International Airport in Oakland, about 21.5 miles (34.6 km) to the west.

Facilities and aircraft

Livermore Municipal Airport covers an area of 644 acres (261 ha) at an elevation of 400 feet (122 m) above mean sea level. It has two asphalt runways:[1]

  • 7L/25R is 5,253 by 100 feet (1,601 × 30m). It has approved instrument approachs.
  • 7R/25L is 2,699 by 75 feet (823 × 23m). It was built in 1985 and is used mainly for training.[3]

The airport also has one asphalt helipad: H1 is 24 by 22 feet (7.3 m × 6.7 m).

For the twelve-month period ending May 1, 2018, the airport had 148,153 aircraft operations, an average of 406 per day: 98% general aviation, 1% air taxi, <1% commercial airline and <1% military. In September 2018, there were 461 aircraft based at this airport: 417 single-engine, 33 multi-engine, 6 jet, and 5 helicopter.[1]

Besides the 8,400-square-foot (780 m2) terminal building,[4] built in 2015, there are nearly 400 aircraft storage hangar units, a corporate-style hangar building containing 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of space and an aircraft storage shelter.

History

A private airfield was built in 1929 near the old highway and what is now Rincon Avenue. In April of 1942, the airfield was taken over by the federal government under condemnation proceedings for use as a Naval Auxiliary Airfield. During the World War II years, the facility provided auxiliary air service to support the Livermore Naval Air Station, which is now the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. After the war, the City of Livermore operated the airfield under a lease with the Navy. The Airport was then known as the Livermore Sky Ranch, the predecessor of the Livermore Municipal Airport. In July of 1953, the Livermore City Council passed a resolution to accept title to Livermore Sky Ranch via a quitclaim deed. The Navy passed title to the City in November of that year. Due to its close proximity to the City ’s downtown, the Livermore Sky Ranch area became increasingly desirable for other uses. In 1958, the City employed a consultant to complete a Master Plan and Site Selection Study for a new airport. Out of many sites considered, the present site was selected and Livermore Sky Ranch was sold to a San Ramon company for residential development. Proceeds from the sale were used to match federal grant monies to develop the new site. Livermore Municipal Airport (LVK) was completed and ready for use in December of 1965.[3]
