The following is a list of homonymous states and regions.
National entities and subnational entities
- This is a list of national entities bearing the same or similar names as subnational entities. For a general list of divided regions bearing the same or similar names, see Divided regions.
- Afghanistan (country) and Afghania (alternative name for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan)
- Azerbaijan (country) and Azerbaijan (historical region of Iran)
- East Timor (country) and West Timor (part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia)
- Georgia (country) and Georgia (U.S. state)
- Guatemala (country) and Guatemala Department (department of Guatemala)
- Luxembourg (country) and Luxembourg (province of Belgium)
- Moldova (country) and Moldova/Moldavia (historical region of Romania)
- Panama (country) and Panamá Province in Panama
- Macedonia (country) and Macedonia (historical-geographic region of Greece); see Macedonia (terminology)
- Originally, Belgica was one of the Latin names of the Netherlands and the French Belgique was used as a translation of the same country's name. However, after the Southern Netherlands became independent as Belgium, it became common to refer to the Netherlands in French as Pays-Bas instead.

- Baden (a historical territory of Germany) and Baden District (a district in Switzerland)
- Brittany (a cultural region in France) and Brittany (an administrative region in France); Brittany (the cultural region) has also been referred to as Less, Lesser or Little Britain (as opposed to Great Britain)
- Galicia, a region and autonomous community of northwestern Spain and Galicia, a historical region in southeastern Poland and western Ukraine
- Munster (a province and ancient sub-national kingdom in Ireland) and Münster (a city in Germany)
- New Caledonia, a French island in the South Pacific, and New Caledonia, a former colony in what is now British Columbia, Canada
- Paraná (state of Brazil) and Paraná (city in Argentina)
Ancient regions

- Galatia (Anatolia) and Galatia (Europe)
- Iberia (Iberian Peninsula), a peninsula in western Europe occupied by Spain and Portugal, and Iberia in the Caucasus region (now mainly in Georgia)
