List of films banned in Malaysia

This is a list of films banned (or rejected) in Malaysia. Films that are assigned the Tidak Diluluskan Untuk Tayangan ("Not Passed for Screening") category by the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia are banned for sale, possession, distribution and screening. Screening rejected films, possessing, selling, or even owning them in private is forbidden and strictly enforced and can be punished with severe fines, up to 20 years imprisonment or both.

1943 The Outlaw Originally banned for its sexual content not suitable for any film during that time. Passed in the 1990s with a VCD release by Movie Master.[1]
1946 The Big Sleep Banned originally, but passed in 1999 with a VCD release and a delayed DVD release from Warner Malaysia Video.[1]
1956 The King and I Banned due to offense from neighboring country Thailand.[2] It was passed in 2005 with a VCD release and a DVD release from Fox Malaysia.
1956 The Ten Commandments Banned by Paramount Malaysia (now United International Pictures) due to religious content.[1]
1959 Ben-Hur (1959) Banned for its religious content. Ban was lifted by Warner Malaysia in 1999 with a VCD and DVD release in time for that film's 40th anniversary. In addition, the 2016 remake was banned for a short while.[1]

1964 491 Banned due to a homosexual rape scene; a censored version was later released.[1]
1968 Rosemary's Baby Banned by Paramount's request due to high impact terror. Passed in 1997 with a home video release by CIC Video.[1]

1975 Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom Banned due to "repulsive, outrageous and abhorrent content." However, Pier Paolo Pasolini's last film was banned at all country.[1]
1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail Still banned and no DVD release.[1]
1976 The Omen Originally banned due to high impact violence, scary images, and satanic ritual references; but was passed in 1997 with a delayed VCD release by Movie Master followed by a Fox Malaysia DVD release in 1999.[1]
1976 Carrie Was never shown in cinemas during its release. Ban lifted by 1996 with a VCD release from Warner-MGM Malaysia. Was also available on its out-of-print DVD release. Most other films based on or written by Stephen King were banned.[1]
1977 Saturday Night Fever Banned by Cinema International Corporation's Paramount Malaysia division, reportedly because it was deemed to cause chaos in the community.[4]

1978 Up in Smoke Banned due to heavy usage of marijuana smoking. Lifted in the early 1990s via CIC Video's Paramount for a delayed VCD release.[1]
1979 Monty Python's Life of Brian All Monty Python's movies are banned for jokes about religion and some black humor.[1]
1979 Alien Was not released in cinemas. Passed in 2001 by Fox Malaysia with a home video release.[1]
1980–present All entries in the Friday the 13th franchise are banned due to high impact cruelty and violence. [1]
1980 Caligula Banned until the mid-2000s.[1]
1980 The Shining (1980 film) Passed and approved by Warner Malaysia and Movie Master with a VCD and DVD release cut in 1999 after Kubrick's death.[1]
1981 My Bloody Valentine The 2009 3D remake has been banned as well.[1]

1995 Piranha (1995 film) (1995) Banned due to intense violence and cruelty. However, the original 1978 film of the same name is allowed.[1]
1995 Species Banned due to frightening and violent images, but passed for a censored VCD release by Fox-Pathe Malaysia in 1997 plus a delayed DVD release in 2000. The 1998 sequel was not banned.[1]

1998 Babe: Pig in the City Banned due to its title and subject matter not being halal (pigs—whether or not they're used as food—are considered highly taboo in the Muslim religion, of which Malaysia has a sizeable population). Released direct-to-VHS when the ruling was overturned almost a year later.[4]

1999 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me never released in cinemas due to comedic sexual content, but passed for a VCD release and delayed DVD release by Sunny Film Productions.[1]
1999 Fight Club Never released in cinemas. Ban lifted a year later and was given a heavily censored VCD and DVD release from Berjava HVN.[1]
1999 South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut banned due to "vulgar, offensive content" (the television series was banned for the same reason, but now the TV series is available on HyppTV ).[1]

2016 The Purge: Election Year Originally banned for its political and violent themes, but later passed and given a release on July 2016.[31]
2016 Sausage Party Banned for its overtly-sexual and vulgar themes and promotion of immoral behaviour and drug use.[1]
2016 Bad Moms Banned for its promotion of immoral behaviour.[1]
2016 Ben-Hur (2016) Originally banned for its religious content. Ban lifted a week after its release by Paramount/Fox Malaysia; and was given a two-week limited release.[1]
2017 Fifty Shades Darker Banned for its overtly-sexual themes and graphic depictions of sex[1]
2017 Beauty and the Beast Banned due to homosexual references in the movie. Disney rejected the Film Censorship Board's suggestions for an edited version, and thus held it from Malaysian release[32] until several days later where it was released without any cuts.[33]
2017 Wonder Woman Banned by Warner Malaysia prior to its premiere and the official release on the account of the film's leading star Gal Gadot's service in the Israeli Army. Passed uncut for a VCD, DVD, and digital HD/on-demand/online download release.
2017 The Belko Experiment Originally banned for gruesome terror. Passed for a delayed release on June 2017.[1]
