List of Paris Saint-Germain F.C. managers

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club is a French professional association football club founded in 1970, and based in the city of Paris in France. The club's first team play in the highest tier of French football, the Ligue 1.[1] Since its inception, Paris SG have had 27 managers.[2] Thomas Tuchel is the current manager.[3]

Background

Current manager Thomas Tuchel.

Pierre Phelipon was the club's first manager, as well as the only player-manager in the history of Paris Saint-Germain. He immediately guided Paris SG to the French top-flight in 1971 after winning its maiden trophy, the Ligue 2 title.[4] In 1976, former Serbian player Velibor Vasović became PSG's first foreign manager.[2]

Georges Peyroche is the club's longest-serving manager, as well as the only PSG manager to spend more than three seasons at the club. He was first-team manager during three seasons and eight months (between November 1979 and June 1983).[5] Peyroche also led the Parisian side to its first major titles with two consecutive French Cup wins in 1982 and 1983.[6]

In 1986, Gérard Houllier became the first manager to make PSG champions of France, followed by Artur Jorge (1994), Carlo Ancelotti (2013), Laurent Blanc (2014, 2015, 2016) and Unai Emery (2018).[6] Ancelotti (once), Blanc (twice) and Emery (once) are the only PSG managers to have won the Ligue 1 Manager of the Season award while managing the club.[7]

Laurent Blanc is the club's most successful manager in terms of trophies won, with 11. In his three seasons in charge, Paris SG won three Ligue 1 titles, two French Cups, three French League Cups and three French Super Cups. Emery is next with seven trophies in two seasons, including one Ligue 1 title, two French Cups, two French League Cups and two French Super Cups.[6]

PSG legends Luis Fernández and Ricardo were also successful managers.[6] Fernández comes third in the list of trophies won, with five. He led Paris SG to the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, French Cup, French League Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and the French Super Cup during two separate spells at the Parc des Princes.[8] He also holds the club record for most games managed, with 244. Ricardo, for his part, guided PSG to the domestic Cup double in 1998 (French Cup and French League Cup).[6]
