List of Olympic ice hockey players for the Soviet Union
The list of Olympic ice hockey players for the Soviet Union consists of 95 skaters and 13 goaltenders. Men's ice hockey tournaments have been staged at the Olympic Games since 1920 (it was introduced at the 1920 Summer Olympics, and was permanently added to the Winter Olympic Games in 1924).[1] The Soviet Union participated in nine tournaments between 1956, when it first joined the Winter Olympics, and 1988, its last Olympics. In subsequent tournaments it was succeeded by the Unified Team (1992), and then the Russia (since 1994).
Throughout its involvement the Soviet Union was the subject of controversy. The Olympic Games were originally intended for amateur athletes, so the players of the National Hockey League (NHL) and other professional leagues were not allowed to compete.[2] Many of Canada's top players were professional, so the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) pushed for the ability to use professional and amateur players. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to allow them until 1986, when it IOC voted to allow all athletes to compete in Olympic Games, starting in 1988.[3] In contrast the Soviet players were considered amateur, despite most of them doing nothing but play hockey, only nominally having positions in other fields (many players, for example, held posts in the Soviet Army. In protest Canada withdrew from the 1972 and 1976 Olympics in protest.[4]
A dominant power during its existence, the Soviet Union won a medal in all nine tournaments it participated in, winning seven gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.[5] 27 players have been inducted into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.[6] Goaltender Vladislav Tretiak played in 4 tournaments, the most among all Soviet players. Three players – Viacheslav Fetisov, Vladimir Krutov, and Sergei Makarov – played in the most games, with 22 each across 3 Olympics. Anatoli Firsov scored the most goals (20), while Fetisov and Valeri Kharlamov had the most assists (21), with Kharlamov having the most total points (36).
