The total number of telephone subscribers in India reached 1,179.32 million as on 31st July 2018. The number of wireless subscribers are 1,157.04 million and the number of wireline subscribers are 22.27 million. [1]

  • On 31 August 2018, Vodafone and Idea merged to form the world's second-largest telecom company, and the largest in India and officially known as Vodafone Idea Limited.[4].
  • Reliance Communications and its subsidiaries plan to reduce their debt of 46,000 crore rupees by selling physical assets such as towers and fiber optic networks, as well as part of its bandwidth to Reliance Jio.[5] From 29 December 2017, the company ended its 2G and 3G service (including all voice service), offering only 4G data service and retail service customers.

Direct-To-Home (DTH) operators

India is the largest DTH market in the world by number of subscribers.

As of September 30th, 2017, there are 66.09 million pay DTH subscribers in the country.[6]

On 22 March 2018, Dish TV merged with Videocon d2h, creating the largest DTH provider in India.[7]
