One of the largest entertainment companies in South Korea, YG Entertainment offered her an opportunity to be a signed artist which she declined later. She chose to continue her music career in China as an independent artist.[1]

Early life

Lexie was born and raised in Changsha, Hunan. She got in touch with music since young; she started to dance since she was four years old and learned to play the piano since six years old. When she was in grade eleven, she transferred to an international high school where she showed strong academic performance. However, she took a Gap year when she was in grade twelve to do her own music. She went to Korea and participated in the reality TV competition series, K-pop Star 5, and won the fourth place.

While shooting the TV show, K-pop Star 5, she was preparing her application materials for college in the meantime. Due to her strong academic and music performance, she was accepted by the Berklee College of Music and Fordham University. As she was about to start her college life, she took another gap semester to continue her music career.

Career

In 2016, she rearranged and covered the song "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez. While keeping the refrain part, she wrote and included a rap part in this song. The cover video received around 9 million views online.

In January 2017, her first original single Coco Made Me Do It was released and achieved more than 5 million views. In February 2017, she performed at SXSW music festival, one of the largest music festivals in the world, bringing Chinese Pop music to the US audience.[2][3]

In January 2018, she composed a song called Role for Li Yifeng, a Chinese popular idol, singer, and actor. Li Yifeng rapped for the first time in his career while Lexie also sang a small part in this song.[4]

She is sometimes referred to as the Chinese Rihanna by the media.[5]
