Leon Abravanel (born July 8, 1986, South Lake Tahoe, California) is an American soccer coach, entrepreneur & teacher.
Leon's Career
Youth and Amateur Soccer
Abravanel attended South Tahoe High School, captaining the team to a state championship in his senior year (Ranked 14th in the Nation), played club soccer for the US National Champion San Juan Predators, and was a four-year member of the Region IV Olympic Development Program team. He was also a High School All-American & High School Academic All-American. He then went on to play college soccer at the University of San Diego where he earned a full-rise scholarship. After red-shirting his junior year, he transferred to the University of Denver where he led his program to its first ever NCAA D1 playoff birth while receiving a full-ride scholarship.
Undrafted by the MLS out of college, Abravanel subsequently played with the Kitsap Pumas in the USL Premier Development League.[1]
Professional Soccer
Abravanel turned professional when he signed with the expansion Los Angeles Blues of the new USL Professional League in February 2010. He made his professional debut on April 17, 2011 in a 2-1 victory over Antigua Barracuda[2] He also trained & played with Athletico Paranese (Brazilian 1st Division), La Paz Futbol Club (Bolivian 1st Division), & FC Osnabrück (German 3rd Division). His professional soccer career lasted four-year and he retired at 25 years old.
Education
Abravanel graduated from South Tahoe High School 11th in his class (top 1%) with a cumulative GPA of 4.2. In college he graduated magna cum laude with a B.A.in Business Management. After retiring from playing professional, he earned an MBA in Entrepreneurship & Organizational Leadership from California Lutheran University.
Entreprenuership
Juggle The World
While earning his MBA, Leon founded Juggle the World, which is a non-profit organization (501c3) based in Compton, CA whose mission is to use the game of soccer to get undeserved youth off the street & into college. JTW is a competitive youth soccer club who competes in Cal South Youth Association. It started with 1 team and has now grown to 15 teams in the Compton/LA area.
Tahoe Training Camps
Leon founded and currently is the CEO of Tahoe Training Camps. The business is based in South Lake Tahoe, is the only youth soccer camp in the country that elevates its campers mind & body. The company's tagline is "Elevate Your Game" and it differentiates itself by its focus on: technical ball mastery, mental skills training, soccer yoga, leadership training, beach soccer, high elevation training, and enjoyable free time in Lake Tahoe.
LAX at the Lake
Leon founded & is the current president of LAX at the Lake, which is South Lake Tahoe's only 7v7 youth lacrosse tournament. Founded in 2017, the tournament has hosted teams from the bay area, San Diego, Utah, Oregon & Nevada.
Tahoe Sports Group
Leon founded & is currently the president of Tahoe Sports Group which is the advisory committee for Tahoe Sports Company, which is a business Leon also started and is currently growing.
Soccer Coaching
Steve Sampson
Leon was mentored by & worked for Coach Steve Sampson, who is the former USMNT Head Coach, LA Galaxy Head Coach, and is currently the Head Coach of Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo. Leon ran Coach Sampson's, day camps, College ID camps and weekly academy.
Calabasas High School Head Boy's Soccer Coach
Leon was at the helm of the Coyote's boys soccer program for three season, where he was named the Marmonte League's coach of the year in his last season in charge. Leon managed 60 student athletes, 3 teams (varsity, jv, frosh/soph), and 8 coaches on his staff.
South Tahoe High School Head Boy's Soccer Coach
Leon is currently the Vikings head boy's varsity soccer coach at his alma mater. He manages 50 student athletes and two teams (varsity & JV).
Eagles Soccer Club
Leon coached both ECNL & youth teams during his three-year stint at Eagles SC.
