Lego DC Super-Villains is an upcoming Lego-themed action-adventure video game developed by Traveller's Tales, which serves as a spin-off to the Lego Batman trilogy and the fourth instalment in the Lego DC franchise. Unlike the Lego Batman trilogy, this is the first Lego video game to focus entirely on villains of the DC Universe, similar to the villain levels featured in Lego Batman: The Videogame. The game will be released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in October 2018.

With the core gameplay following the same style of past Lego titles, the game features a customized character in the game's story. The game also features a two-player cooperative multiplayer mode.[1] The game's storyline centers around supervillains from the DC Universe as they battle against a group of superheroes from another universe.[1]

Gameplay

Lego DC Super-Villains is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective. The core gameplay features similarities to the Lego Batman Trilogy and other Lego video games, alternating between various action-adventure sequences and puzzle-solving scenarios.[1]

Characters

Much like Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes & Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, players are able to control a roster of iconic and obscure characters from the DC Universe, each with their own unique abilities. For the first time in a Lego video game, players can create a custom character that will be integrated into the story. As players progress in the game, new customisation options and abilities would be unlocked for players to use.[2] The game's inclusion of a customized main character in the story and its upgrades are heavily inspired from Ubisoft's South Park video games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole.[3]

Downloadable content

A season pass and a Deluxe Edition, which includes the "DC Super-Villains: TV Series DLC Character Pack" and the "Justice League Dark DLC Character Pack" will be available alongside the game.[4] On August 31, 2018, more details for the season pass was revealed, consisting of two levels based after the forthcoming Aquaman & Shazam! films, as well levels based after of Batman: The Animated Series and Young Justice. Other character packs includes of the "DC Super Heroes: TV Series DLC Character Pack", consisting of the characters from The CW DC related programming The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning and the DC Films pack, consisting of characters from the DC Extended Universe.[5]

Premise

The Justice League has gone missing, leaving Earth's protection under the care of a new superhero team from a parallel universe called the "Justice Syndicate". Under the leadership of Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker, and the help of a criminal with a vast array of powers, similar to Amazo, that's been taken under the wing of Lex Luthor, the Injustice League, comprised of a large number of super-criminals, decides to up the ante with their newfound enemies. When they discover that Earth's new heroes are not who they claim to be, the League must uncover and thwart their plans in order to save the Earth, during which, Darkseid discovers that the Anti-Life Equation is on Earth, causing an all-out war between the forces of Apokolips and the people of Earth.[6][7]

Development

The game was leaked by Walmart Canada in May 2018.[8] Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the title officially on May 30, 2018.[9] Game director Arthur Parsons revealed that the concept of a super-villain themed game dates back in 2008's Lego Batman: The Videogame, where it featured levels based on a supervillian's point of view of the story.[10]

Voice acting

The game's voice work is directed by Liam O'Brien, where this marks the first Lego game since Lego Dimensions to have original voice acting utilized by actors who are affiliated with the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) following the conclusion of the 2016–17 video game voice actor strike.[11] Parsons has stated that the game utilizes an "All-Star" voice cast, where he describes his excitement on the game's cast as the best one that he has ever worked on in any Lego game that the company has ever done.[10] Like Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, the cast consists of a number of various actors reprising roles from various DC properties.[12] The noticeable addition to the game's cast features Michael Ironside reprising his role as Darkseid since the Justice League Unlimited series finale "Destroyer", for the first time in twelve years.[13]
