EDGE Program

The Legend High School EDGE Program is a non traditional education pathway offered to students of Legend High School in Parker, Colorado. Consisting of project based learning, students in the program create interdisciplinary projects each academic quarter and present them to parents and community members for feedback, Students are also able to pursue hobbies, passions, and possible future careers as they build projects, and are frequently required to travel outside the classroom for real world experiences.

Since The EDGE Program’s creation in 2016, it contains 202 Students,[4] a faculty to student ratio of 1:9, 186 partnerships with businesses and organizations in the community, and support from the school and community of Parker.

Curriculum

Curriculum in The EDGE Program consists of personalized and project based learning. Students often choose topics related to their core classes or interests, and explore these topics in depth. They then use these topics to create cross-curricular projects to present to the community during “Exhibition Nights”.

Courses

The EDGE Program's basic classes are humanities, Spanish, English, math, science, and technology. Although Spanish is the only languages taught in the program, students can opt out of Spanish if they are receiving credit for another language in the school.

The EDGE Program offers 9 Honors classes and 12 concurrent enrollment classes, to allow students more flexibility in the content they learn and the depth they go into. EDGE also allows select students to take AP Courses and college classes at the Arapahoe Community College, as well as special electives for project management or job internships to receive credit for extracurricular activities outside of EDGE.

Grading

Grading is based on students’ growth and interests. Students receive grades based on their growth in relation to their achievements. Students are also encouraged to receive feedback before each exhibition night, and have opportunities to continue projects to gain more depth and understanding.

Job Shadowing/Internship Opportunities

Students in The EDGE Program are required to participate in Job Shadows and Internships with members of the community. These internships and shadows provide real world knowledge, skills, and networks for students within their fields of interest, and may help them find future career options previously unbeknownst to them.

Students must contact these businesses and organizations on their own, and if they cannot secure a connection, EDGE Mentors will help them. EDGE currently has 176 Business Partners and 12 Non-profit partners for students to connect with.[4]

Students have shadowed at law firms, engineering firms, NASA, with the current mayor of Parker, Mike Waid, the South Metro Fire Department, and many more. Many of these now becoming partners with the school and open to more students shadowing or interning.
