Douglas County School District Re. 1 is a school district that serves Douglas County, Colorado. The district was formed in 1958 by the consolidation of 17 smaller school districts, adding the "Re. 1" to its name to note the district's first reorganization.

In 2017, the district announced a partnership with Arapahoe Community College and Colorado State University to build a $40 million campus in Castle Rock, Colorado. [1]

Controversies

The Douglas County School District is a central feature of the documentary Education Inc., which includes information on the pro-charter school and pro-voucher school board majority was elected in 2009. As a consequence, teacher exodus increased from 10.2 percent to 16.7 percent in the 2014-15 school year.[3] In the 2013-14 school year, it had been as high as 17.3 percent.[3] The new school board also launched a voucher program that allowed funds be used to send children to private schools, including religious ones.[4] The school board's school choice philosophy resulted in protests by some parents and students.

In 2014, the school district was mired in controversy after a Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter organized a mission's trip to Guatemala in March of that year. The school sent home flyers with kids as young as preschool, advertising a supply drive for the trip, as well as phone calls and emails asking for donations.[5] American Humanist Association sued the district in October of 2014, naming Highlands Ranch High School and Cougar Run Elementary school in the lawsuit, for promoting Christianity and violating First Amendment rights.[6] In July of 2018, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that the school system did indeed violate the Constitution.[7]

In 2015, the Colorado Supreme Court struck down Douglas County's school voucher program as violating the state constitution, which prohibits public funds to support parochial schools as a choice option for parents.[4]
