LanguageTool is a free and open-source spell and grammar checker, which can be used as a plug-in for LibreOffice, OpenOffice,[2] Vim,[3][4] Emacs,[5] Firefox[6], Thunderbird,[7], and Google Chrome[8], or as a stand-alone desktop application. It can also be integrated on websites.[9]
Started by Daniel Naber for his diploma thesis[10] in 2003 (then written in Python), it now has around 10 regular committers and supports 31 languages.[11]
Based on error detection patterns, rules are created and then tested for a given text.
