History
In 1958, a piece of land measuring 256 kanals was proposed for the creation of a beggar house. The land was located 17 kilometers from Lahore. On 27 February 1958, Begum Naheed Sikandar Mirza W/O Governor General of Pakistan laid the foundation of the beggar house. The opening ceremony was held on 30 September 1958 after the first phase of construction completion.
Soon after, the plan for the beggar house was dropped and it was decided to build a health facility instead. The Lahore General Hospital was inaugurated on 29 January 1959 by the then Governor of West Pakistan, Akhtar Hussain. Initially, the hospital functioned as a convalescent home for the patients from the Mayo Hospital. In 1966, the Department of Neurosurgery of King Edward Medical College was set up at the Lahore General Hospital. In the next few decades, other departments were established and associated with the hospital.
In 1998, Lahore General Hospital was declared an autonomous hospital and Khurshid Ahmad was appointed as first Chief Executive of the hospital.
Presently, it is a 1600-bedded hospital. In 2017, it became the first public sector hospital to successfully perform a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.[1] It was recently exempted from all utility taxes.[2]
