Kutumba Gowravam (English: Family prestige) is a 1957 Telugu drama film, produced and directed by veteran B. S. Ranga under the Vikram Studios banner.[3][4] It stars N. T. Rama Rao and Savitri in the lead roles,[5] with music composed by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy.[6] The film was remade as the Tamil movie of the same name, under the same banner & director; starring Gemini Ganesan and Savitri in pivotal roles.[7] The film was recorded as a Super Hit at the box office.[8]

Plot

Gopalam (N. T. Rama Rao) is a young energetic guy, son of a Zamindar (Doraiswamy), he leads a happy family life with his wife Satya (Savitri), stepmother Rangamma (Kannamba), younger brother Pratap (Padmanabham) and a little sister Bala (Baby Uma). Shankariah (Rajanala), a distant relative of Rangamma also lives with them, who plans to grab their property. The Zamindar when sick, takes a promise from Gopalam to protect the family prestige at any cost. Shankaraiah makes Zamindar write a will and without reading, makes him to sign on it before the public. Meanwhile, Pratap is attracted towards a call girl Mohana (E. V. Saroja) and tries to steal the ornaments from the house, when his father tries obstruct his way, but dies in that mishap. Shankaraiah slowly poisons Rangamma’s mind, then the misunderstandings develop between Rangamma and Gopalam. Rangamma asks to divide the property. Due to Shankariah’s crooked plans, Gopalam gets a wasteland as his share. Gopalam and Satya struggle in tilling the wasteland bring out the water and succeed in cultivating it as a fertile land. At the same time, Pratap wastes all the money and Shankariah takes the hold of property and shifts the family to the city in the name of a business. Shankaraiah shows heavy losses in the business, takes away all the money and also implicates Pratap in a murder case. Gopalam comes to their rescue, saves his brother, sees the end of Shankaraiah and protects the family prestige. Rangamma also realizes her mistake says sorry to Gopalam and Satya. Finally, the entire family is reunited.
