Plot

On a trip to Jaisalmer, Kolkata based IPS Officer Ranojoy Chatterjee aka Rono meets Roopkatha, a sophisticated, cultured girl of humble origin. They mutually develop romantic feelings but cannot express the same, though before they bid adieu, Rono asks her to wait for his call, implying to an imminent love confession. Rono gets posted to Sundarpur (a village in North Bengal), where he meets police officer Jayanta Mukherjee and his studious but outgoing and short-tempered daughter, Emon. Upon accidentally losing his cell phone, Rono could not contact Roopkatha, who feeling cheated, decides to move on in life, and incidentally gets married to Rono's cousin, Badshah; unbeknownst to the fact herself. Rono confronts Roopkatha for marrying his brother and after he clears her misunderstanding, he explains her his dilemma that he can never betray his beloved brother by annulling his marriage with Roopkatha. Though Rono commits Roopkatha that he will never fall in love with any other woman and start his own family. Later Badshah, getting to know the true extent of the relationship that co-exists between Rono and Roopkatha, leaves the house without informing anyone, not intending to become a third person in Rono-Roopkatha's relationship.

Meanwhile, in Sundarpur, Gogna (a local goon and Emon's stalker) shoots Jayanta, in a police firing. Rono gives a dying Jayanta his word that he will look after Iman after Jayanta's death. The villagers force Rono to marry a reluctant Emon, as he does so out of sympathy, in order to secure Emon's future. However, Rono makes it clear that he is committed to Roopkatha, whom he could not marry due to tragic events. Emon readily agrees not to keep any expectation from him (as a husband) and will walk out of his life soon after getting her career (as a doctor) straight. Emon continues her medical studies from the Chatterjee house amidst all the family feuds, as she struggles to win over Rono's family members in parallel. Roopkatha and Emon's relationship grows bitter day by day, as she inflicts upon Emon all her frustration on account of Rono's betrayal. Meanwhile, Rono gets emotionally attached to Emon, given her repeated attempts to make the lives of Rono's family members happier; and subsequently falls in love with her, but cannot confess.

Afterwards, Emon brings Badshah back after a chance encounter with him during her North Bengal trip. Badshah returns to free Roopkatha from their namesake relationship, however, the latter insists to stay in the relationship only to remain in Rono's association. Meanwhile, Emon-Rono's relationship takes a positive turn after Emon finally confesses love to Rono on his birthday. A devastated Roopkatha accuses Rono to get her pregnant, but seeing Emon firmly believes Rono to be innocent, reveals that her accusation was fake and plans to leave the house but is stopped by Badshah and the family. Later, during Durga Puja celebration, Emon helps Koli (Rono's sister) reunite with and get married to her lover, Dipto. On the other hand, Rono fulfilling his promise to his dying college friend, Krishnamoy (who is an antisocial leader), brings his pregnant wife Shruti to Kolkata for safely conducting her delivery. Emon starts suspecting Rono, as he often has to stay at the rented hotel overnight to keep on checking Shruti's health. Rono's family members also inquire him about the same and stand by Emon, while amid all the tension, Shruti gives birth to her and Krishna's child, "Michhil". Emon thinking Rono to be the biological father of Shruti's child, feeling cheated by Rono, files for a divorce.

Rono is forced to leave the house because of his supposed infidelity, while Shruti sympathizes with him and is shown to develop romantic feelings for Rono. When Rono receives a showcause regarding his relationship with Shruti, Emon files the signed divorce papers on a backdate to save Rono from any legal action. Emon gets to know she is pregnant, but is then abducted by the supposedly-dead Krishnamoy who seeks revenge from Rono, having misunderstood his relationship with Shruti. Emon is rescued by Rono, whom she once again misunderstand to have wronged Kriahnamoy like her as well and hence, files a lawsuit against Rono for infidelity. Meanwhile, Shruti confesses her love to Rono. In court, Rono is proved innocent and Emon repents for her actions. Also, the court declares Rono-Emon's supposed divorce to be null and void. Later, Rono goes to meet Krishnamoy in jungle to plead him for changing his way of living for the sake of Shruti and their baby. But Krishna, in a fit of rage, shoots Rono, who is saved after Shruti donates her blood to him, while Krishna is arrested.

Post recovery, Rono is adamant not to forgive Emon and his family for mistrusting him, while Shruti, along with Michhil, leaves for North Bengal to serve her job there. Eventually, with the help of their lawyers-turned-friends, Rono and Emon resolve their differences and reunite. Gogna returns and kidnaps Emon, but is injured by Rono who comes to Emon's rescue. After Emon (now an intern) saves Gogna from a mortal danger and cures him up with her treatment, Gogna repents for his misdeeds and decides to mend his ways, but promises Iman to stand by her at times of need. Roopkatha has an emotional burst-out but is assured by Badshah to be by her side always as he loves her. Roopkatha reciprocates his love, marking a fresh start for the two.

Shruti comes to Rono, asking him to take Michhil's responsibility as she is revealed to be in the last stage of breast cancer and is on the verge of death. Rono tries his level best to help Shruti recover from her disease, but Emon once again grows insecure for Rono.[7] When Rono could not remain present during Emon's delivery,[8] due to Shruti's operation, Emon breaks all ties with Rono and later, leaves for Ujanpur (to serve sa a doctor there) with her new-born daughter, Pekhom, and Sabitri. Rono too gets a transfer for his job there, for his concern about Emon and Pekhom's security. Emon grows extremely angry at Rono's actions, while some days later, after an emotional trauma, Shruti finally dies in Ujanpur Hospital;[9] only after expressing her desire to Rono and Emon that they should reunite with each other post her demise. With her death, Rono and Emon feel depressed and once again begin to come close to each other. Later, Rono has to arrest Emon, regarding her role/fault in the accidental death of a patient named Parasar, under her charge, caused at her hospital. But, soon he arranges for her bail, and decides to find out the true culprits as well as the persons responsible for illegal trafficking of new born children from the hospital. Later, the case in taken to the court where Madhuparna defends Emon as her lawyer, and after Nurse Ratnabali is proven guilty for the crime, Emon is released free of charge. Emon and Rono finally resolve their differences and relocate themselves to Kolkata in the Chatterjee house.

Meanwhile, Roopkatha grows jealous and agitated over Emon for getting a happy peaceful life, which she herself yearns for, having no children as of yet. She acts very harsh towards everyone, especially Emon regarding her trauma and to pacify her Emon gives her daughter Pekhom's charge to Roopkatha, who quickly gets over-possessive of Pekhom and will not allow others, even Emon to see the child. Krishnamoy too arrives, having been released from jail, to take his son Michhil back with him, leaving Rono disheartened. To mend the gloomy atmosphere in the family, especially to cheer up Rono, Emon plans for a trip. Emon manages to take an initially-reluctant Roopkatha on the trip as well. However, Badshah suffers from a heart attack which leads to his abrupt death, shocking everyone. A desolate Roopkatha blames Emon for being responsible for Badshah's demise, as had she not forced her to come on the trip, Badshah would not have came as well. Later, a widowed Roopkatha, feeling life to have turned colourless and worthless for her, attempts suicide by drowning herself in the river. But Rono rescues her. After Roopkatha is diagnosed with severe depression, Rono stands by her to help her recover, while she blames Rono for her condition and seeks him as the loved one to fill in her loneliness.

Rono's family wants Roopkatha out of the house to avoid any further tension regarding her, provided Badshah is no more. But Rono dismisses such decision. Rono feels guilty thinking himself to be the reason for Roopkatha's plight, and hence, decides to stand by to her all her life. Emon and other family members feel insecure due to Rono's growing proximity towards Roopkatha, and everyone suspect them for having an affair. Meanwhile, Tublu gets an offer to play the lead role in a Hindi film, giving his career a boost. Soon after, an eccentric Roopkatha assumes herself to be pregnant, and thinking it to be Rono's child, a heart-broken Emon leaves the house and shifts to her hospital campus (along with Pekhom) to pursue an M.D. degree, parallelly maintaining her private practice and part-time job as a teacher at college. Rono tries to sort out things with her but to no avail. Soon it is revealed that Roopkatha is not pregnant and instead has a tumour in her uterus, that poses a threat to her life. Roopkatha struggles to accept the fact and is finally made to the leave the Chatterjee house for her own betterment so that she can start her life afresh. Emon and Rono however remain separated.

Epilogue - 5 Years Later

5 years later, Roopkatha, now a college professor and totally stable on her own, meets Emon, now a successful professional doctor, to invite her to her wedding. Later, she meets Rono who has abandoned living with his family as well, to discuss her marriage preparations. Secretly, Roopkatha plans to reunite Emon-Rono by getting them remarried on the day of her wedding and their twelfth marriage anniversary. Meanwhile, Emon receives the Konya Rotno award. Emon, as per Roopkatha's request, manages to bring the Chatterjees to Roopkatha's wedding, much to their distaste, as all assume that Roopkatha is getting married to Rono; and hence, venge out their anger publicly at the wedding venue. However, Roopkatha surprises everyone by introducing a man named Alok as her groom. She makes it clear that she indeed shares only a friendly relationship with Rono, and pursues him to remarry Emon on the occasion. As he does so, Emon emotionally confronts him, marking their reunion, sorting out all their differences. His family members too realise his innocence in the events from 5 years ago; and finally apologising to him for their past misunderstandings, reunite with him, welcoming him and Emon back into their family. Lastly, Roopkatha, taking the heartfelt apologies, blessings and good wishes from the Chatterjees; gets married to Alok, marking a new phase in her life; as the series ends on a joyous note!

Background and production

Development

Screenwriter Leena Gangopadhyay[17] who has previously written down the script for Bengali TV shows like ETV Bangla's long-running drama series Sonar Horin and another daily soap Binni Dhaner Khoi, Zee Bangla's partition-themed love saga Keya Patar Nouko, and Star Jalsha's serials Ishti Kutum and Jol Nupur ; developed the central idea for Kusum Dola, whose premise was initially based on a love triangle.[3]

She made the main female protagonist, tentatively named Shimul, a village girl who is bright in her studies and quite upfront by nature. Circumstances force the girl to marry a man (the lead hero), who is previously committed to another woman (the third main lead). The story follows the man's story to get over his feelings for the other woman and how he finally falls in love with the heroine (Shimul). Ganguly decided to have the backdrop of an extended family, and had the other woman (named Roopkatha) get married to the hero's brother and live in the same house as the hero (named Rono).[16]

Casting

Rishi Kaushik who had previously collaborated with Ganguly and Banerjee in their production Ishti Kutum,[18] was selected to portray the lead role of IPS Ranojoy Chatterjee a.k.a. Rono.
