The station was originally set to be named North Malvern railway station, but was renamed shortly prior to opening amid fears regarding the name's similarity to North Melbourne railway station.[2]

A signal box is situated on Platform 2 at the northern end of the station, to control the Glenferrie Road tramway crossing.
