Khara (surname)

Khaira is a Jatt surname common among Sikhs in Punjab, India. The surname is particularly common in the city of Amritsar as Khaira’s from [[West Punjab|Punjab. There are many variations of this surname indcluding, Khehra, Khaira, Khara and Khera. The surname should not be confused, however, with the Khera caste, also from Punjab.

Historical Reference

There may be early known references of Kharas in old scriptures but the one that are famous are as follow:

  • Famous "Mahima"(Punjabi: ਮਹਿਮਾ) named Sikh of Guru Angad Dev.[1]
  • Himachali rajputs of Jaheer Chand clan.(Jaheer Chand was the son of Tara Chand[2] - The king of Kehloor at the time of Guru Har Gobind).
  • Baba Deep Singh Shaheed (Punjabi: ਬਾਬਾ ਦੀਪਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ) was jatt Khaira by caste.[3]
  • Natha Khaira (The headman of village Mirankot) and his son attained martyrdom in defence of Rai Singh (Son of Bhai Mehtab Singh).[4]
  • Pooran Bhagat da Kissa (English Translation: Story of Pooran Bhagat) was written by Jagat Singh Khaara

Religion

People with the Khaira/Khara surname in India are mostly Sikhs but if in Pakistan mostly Sikhs that have converted to Islam and are now Muslims

Most people with the surname Khaira are Sikhs and reside in India. However, remaining Khaira populations in Pakistan are more frequently Muslim. Due to intermarriages, some Khairas are also Hindus, especially in regions like Singapore.
