Kenyatta University Hospital (KUH), also Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, is a tertiary referral hospital that serves as the teaching hospital of the Kenyatta University Medical School, a public university's school of medicine, in Kenya.[1]
Location
The hospital is located along Northern Bypass Road, in extreme north-eastern Nairobi County, adjacent to that county's border with Kiambu County, approximately 23 kilometres (14 mi), by road, north-east of Kenyatta National Hospital, the largest hospital in Kenya.[2] The geographical coordinates of the hospital are:01°10'33.0"S, 36°54'57.0"E (Latitude:-1.175833; Longitude:36.915833).[3]
Overview
KUH is a modern state-of-art 600 bed facility with special medical amenities, including a 21-bed Intensive Care Unit, eight operating rooms (theaters), an emergency room, dialysis unit and the latest in imaging equipment.[1][4]
The hospital is also expected to serve as a teaching facility for Kenyatta University's students, specializing in human medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and other related health specialties.[5]
History
Kenyatta University Hospital was conceived by Professor Olive Mugenda, who served as the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, between 2006 and March 2016.[6]
The ground was broken by former president of Kenya Mwai Kibaki, on 7 October 2011.[7] Construction began in 2011, and as of August 2018, the hospital is yet to open its doors to the public.[8]
Construction
Former president Mwai Kibaki broke the ground in October 2011.[7] On 9 July 2014, president Uhuru Kenyatta toured he construction site.[9] The construction contract was awarded to China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation]] (CJIC), at a contract price of US$99 million (KES:9.85 billion), borrowed from the Exim Bank of China.[5]
