Kazakhstan Independence Day (Kazakh: Қазақстан Республикасының Тәуелсіздік күні) is the main national holiday in the Republic of Kazakhstan, celebrated annually the 16th of December. If 16 December falls on a weekend, the following Monday will be a holiday.

History

In an attempt to keep unity within the Soviet Union, the country held a referendum on March 16, 1991 and Kazakhstan voted 95% in favor of a New Union Treaty.

Following the aborted coup d'état in August, the Supreme Soviet passed the Constitutional Independence Law of Republic of Kazakhstan on December 16, 1991. Despite the swift collapse of the USSR, Kazakhstan was the last to declare its independence. The Republic of Kazakhstan is a young, independent country, however, great and significant governmental changes took place during the period. Two house parliamentary system and a new capital were established. Armed Forces, Republican Guard, Border Guards and Military-Maritime Fleet were founded not long ago. The economic system was radically transformed.

Kazakhstan became the leading country among the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe in attracting foreign investments. Considerable social and pensionary reforms were passed. One of the first voluntary anti-nuclear movements in the former Soviet Union was led in Kazakhstan. More than 120 countries officially recognised Kazakhstan’s Independence and established diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is an authorised and active representative of the United Nations and is in consolidate collaboration with more influential organisations, such as European Union, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Monetary Fund, International Atomic Energy Agency, Red Cross, UNICEF and UNESCO. Kazakhstan joined more than 40 multilateral and 700 bilateral treaties.

Celebrations

The holiday is celebrated for 2 days on December 16 and 17. It is marked by festivities in the presidential palace and many Kazakhs will dress up in traditional clothes. Yurts (traditional tents) will be set up in many villages where local delicacies will be served.[1]

In 1996 the first independence day military parade of Kazakhstan was held on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of independence. The parade was held on Republic Square in Almaty.[2]
