Kanpur Police is the district unit of Uttar Pradesh Police responsible for the Kanpur Nagar District.

Structure

Kanpur district comes under the Kanpur Police Zone and Kanpur Police Range, Kanpur Zone is headed by an Additional Director General ranked IPS officer, and the Kanpur Range is headed Inspector General ranked IPS officer. The current ADG, Kanpur Zone is Avanish Chandra,[3] and IG, Kanpur Range is Alok Singh.[4]

The district police is headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) who is an IPS officer, and is assisted by seven Superintendents of Police (SP)/Additional Superintendents of Police (Addl. SP) (East, West, South, Rural Area, Crime, Traffic and Modern Control Room), who are either IPS officers or PPS officers.[5] Each of the several police circles is headed Circle an Officer (CO) in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.[5] The current SSP is Akhilesh Kumar.[5]

The final responsibility of law and order at the divisional and district level however is of the Divisional Commissioner of Kanpur and the District Magistrate of Kanpur respectively.[6][7][8]

Patrolling and duty

The district police have decided to increase the police patrolling during late night hours and launch an awareness campaign in the commercial as well as residential localities as a precautionary measure in order to check cases of theft in the industrial district. "Unless you are armed, do not even dare to resist these elements because they are well-equipped," said DIG Hari Ram Sharma.[9]

Now there are Toyota Xylo cars for cops in every police station in the district for patrolling. According to DIG there are 10 police Xylo cars with Red/Blue/Red (RBD) cuboid lights. 250 Maruti Suzuki 800 with RBD lights are also to be brought for patrolling at populated areas of every Police Station circle.
