Kanet

The Kanet are a Hindu caste found in the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India.[1] They are generally regarded as a thakur (noble) caste, even though they have sometimes been classified otherwise.

History and origin

The community is said to be descended from Rajputs of the Kuninda Kingdom, dating from the 2nd century BCE to 3rd century CE (in modern Uttarakhand/Himachal).

Kanet is said to be derived from the Sanskrit kunit, which means "indifferent to caste".

Despite their status as thakurs, the Kanet were officially classified as shudras (low caste) by the British Raj.

Distribution

The Kanet are found in eastern Himachal Pradesh, except Kangra and Hamirpur.

They now occupy throughout Suket, Kullu, Mandi, Sirmur, Shimla, Solan and Bilaspur.
