Kanchanbari

Kanchanbari is a village in Kumarghat Tehsil, Unakoti district of Tripura state, India. It is located 28 km to the south of the district headquarters at Kailasahar and 91 km from the state capital at Agartala. It has a population of 6,649 people.

The Kanchanbari Post Office with pin code 799288 is situated to the southern part of the Market. The market is at the center of the village. And DSCHSC is at the western part of the market. The market is rectangular in shape with two rows running from north to south. There is a Satsangh, Ramthakur Ashram and Tripura Gramin Bank, PHS, TSECL sub division, Hostal, multipurpose hall and a small hall on the western bank of the Dhigi. A Tashil and a Gram panchayet is also available.

Demographics of Kanchanbari

The local languages of Kanchanbari are Bengali and Manipuri. Though Bishnupriya Manipuri is also spoken. 99.99% of the total population are Hindus. The Choudhurys were the only Jaminder during kings rule in Tripura. The early name of the village was Sinchu, but now it is known as Kanchanbari. Most of the people are farmer. Some of the notable people in this village are Kamala Choudhury(Jamindar), Dhana Singha Choudhury(Land doner of the school), Gupi Raman Datta(CPIM leader),Lalit Chakraborty (Bramin) and well known teachers are Nipendra Chanda, Sailendra Chanda, Jadu lal Roy, Arun Paul, Jagadish Bhowmik etc. These people made the village by mesmerizing its name. They are born, grown and worked in this village. Most of the Bengalis are Sylheti and Noakhali.

Communication and Topography

There are two transport to reach the village. One is roadways and the other is railways. Waterways were there before 1971 but now it is disfunctional. The National Highway no.44 passes to the eastern side of the village. To reach the market you may go from 82 miles or Kumarghat via Batcherra or Fatikroy.Kumarghat Railway Station is the nearest railway station leading to Kanchanbari. Though Nalkata Railway station is near by but due to improper communication people likes to visit via kumarghat Railway station.

The village is a plain area where the river Manu flowing to its Eastern part and the river plays important rule in irrigation of the area. There is a big Dighi (Kanchanmala Dighi) and a Lake (Dhil) near the market. More than 70% of the village is paddy field. The paddy field is located to the west of the market. A small stream named Laljhuri Chhara passes to the west of the market. The irrigation canal flows to the western part of the village. The village has no forest area. Though some hillocks are seen with rubber plantations. The Eastern Part of the village is known as Dudhpur, northern part Taraninagar and Ramnagar, western part West Kanchanbari and homeless and Southern part Masauli and Laljuri. Very little vegetation is seen. Arecanut, Coconut, banana, vegetables, rice, rubber are the principal crops. Most of the houses have a pond near by.

Schools

The Dhana Singha Choudhury Memorial High School is the only 12-class school of this locality.
