Kalaw (Burmese: ကလောမြို့; Shan: ၵလေႃး [ka lɔ]) is a hill town in the Shan State of Myanmar. It is located in Kalaw Township in Taunggyi District Southern Shan State, Myanmar

Overview

Kalaw is situated in Shan State, Myanmar. Kalaw is a popular hill station of Myanmar. It is a peaceful and quiet place. It is well known trekking destination offering walks throughout the region, including to the famous Inle Lake. At an altitude of 1320 metres it's also pleasantly cool and a good place for hiking and amid gnarled pines, bamboo groves and rugged mountain scenery. Kalaw stands high on the western edge of the Shan Plateau. It is 70 km west of Taungyi. about halfway along the Thazi-Taungyi road. This was a popular hill station in the British days and it is still a peaceful and quiet place. Kalaw is an excellent base for visitors who wish to trek in the beautiful, hilly scenery of surrounding Shan State, visiting the villages of the local minority groups and escaping the muggy heat of the lowlands. During the colonial period, Kalaw was a British hill station. Relics of this era still exist within the township with colonial style buildings and the British built rail network. A former colonial British hill station. this small-town offers cool temperatures (Kalaw sits at 1.300 meters elevation) and plenty of trekking opportunities. The population is a mix of Shan. Indian Muslims. Bamars and Nepalis (Gurkhas retired from British military service). many of whom are missionary educated. Traveling by car. it's about two hours west of Nyaungshwe on the western edge of the Shan hills. Nowadays, some of the churches are still in good conditions. Many British style buildings are still available in Kalaw. Church like "Christ the King" is also a popular place to visit. Tudor-style houses sit amongst English rose gardens, making an interesting contrast to the traditional Burmese villages that surround the town. But there are also plenty of examples of Asian architecture in Kalaw. The name of the local people of the Palaung people a result of which the pronunciation. According Palaung meaning of the pan or bowl. Kalaw pan picture is surrounded by mountains from the four winds, and to call it like that. Kalaw has natural atmosphere, cool and refreshing climate, and breathtaking scenery. It is well-known as a trekking mecca of Myanmar and an ideal region for colorful hill tribe and agricultural life discovery.

Location

Kalaw Township is situated in Taunggyi District, the Southern Shan State. Astronomically it lie between latitudes 20 24’ 24” N and 21 1’ 57”N and longitudes 96 26’ 32”E, It has an area of 582.1 square miles (or) 1,512.9 square kilometers. The township composed of 2 towns, 25 village tracts and 256 villages. It is bounded by Yaksauk, Taunggyi, Nyaungshwe, Pinlaung and Pindaya townships and Manadalay Region. The main tourist attractive towns and villages are Kalaw and Aungban towns, and Heho, Myinmahti and national races living villages located on mountains in Kalaw Township. Kalaw, Pine land is the main town in Kalaw Township and lies about 1300 meter (4315’) above sea level. It was a former colonial British hill station, the famous summer reseort town offers pleasantly cool and a good site fortrekking and hiking amid west of Taunggyi. This small town is still a peaceful and quite place. Kalaw Market also attracts both international and domestic tourists. The market place is alive with activity and the hill tribe people worn their colorful national costumes. It is crowded with vendors selling a variety of local product.

Topography

1.2 Topography and Drainage Kalaw Township is situated on the Shan Highland. It is composed of mountain ranges, upland areas and valley plains. This varied topography attracts to international and domestic vistors. Between the Kalaw and Aungban, Myinmahti Taung(1,532m or 5,026 feet), khun-hnit-sin-Taung(1,529m or 5,016feet) are found. The mountain trails run west from kalaw through Sin taung, Myinmahti taung ending at Villages on the west InlayLake shore. Most international Tourists can trek in either direction. The serval trekking routes from Kalaw to the end of Inlay Lake pass through these mountains. Both native resident and tourists live enjoying the beautiful views of the Mt.Myinmahti and Khoun-Hnit-Sin-Taung during their leisure. Trekking tourists can see beautiful tea plantations and orchards cultivated by hill tribes such as Palaungs, Danus, Taungyos and so on, and their living styles can be observed. There are also high mountain basins on this township, namely, Heho and Bawsaing basins. The chief drainage characteristics mean the hydrology and related features of rivers, streams, lakes, swamps and springs, etc. The mainstream Kalaw and Tha-mine-hkan streams are flowing from north to south with the north – south aligning mountain ranges. Other streams are Nantaing, Aungban, Bilu, Taung and Nannaine streams. Lakes in the township are Mingalar Lake in Aungban and Yaeye Lake in Kalaw Township etc….. One of the most interesting places in Kalaw Zone is cool water lake called Ye Aye lake. The entire of water supply system in kalaw is based upon this lak. According to literature survey, the water of cool water lake has been tested in England and the results have shown that it is very rate natural spring water could be vigorously helpful to human health and longevity. This lake is situated in the northwestern part of Kalaw. Many spring are also encountered within the township. The springs are very useful for local people; some spring is the famous spring for local travelers. It is well known as Inn-hkaung Dam.
