KYMX is commercial radio station located in Sacramento, California. The station broadcasts an adult contemporary format branded as Mix 96. Its transmitter is located in Natomas, and its studios are in North Sacramento (just north of the American River).

History

Mix 96 went on the air on February 1, 1990, replacing KCTC, a beautiful music/"California Sound" station. KCTC, in turn, had moved to adult standards-formatted 1320 AM.[1] Mix 96 had been a soft rock station since its inception, but recently has expanded its playlist to include more adult contemporary (i.e. beyond soft rock, such as country/rock crossovers and occasional disco) songs, its playlist covering four decades of music.

The KYMX story goes all the way back to March 1947, when founder Central Valleys Broadcasting Co. received a construction permit for a new Class B FM station in Sacramento at 96.1 MHz. This new Class B FM station would be assigned the call letters KCRA-FM, since it was the FM adjunct to 1320 AM KCRA, which Central Valleys Broadcasting had founded two years earlier. In September 1968, the KCRA-FM call letters were changed to KCTC, and the station would retain these letters for 22 years, becoming KYMX in 1990.

On February 2, 2017, CBS Radio announced it would merge with Entercom (which locally owns KKDO, KUDL, KSEG, KRXQ, and KIFM; the company formerly owned KDND until it shut the station down and turned in its license to the Federal Communications Commission two days later).[2] On October 10, CBS Radio announced that as part of the process of obtaining regulatory approval of the merger, KYMX would be one of sixteen stations that would be divested by Entercom, along with sister stations KZZO, KNCI, and KHTK (KSFM would be retained by Entercom).[3] Bonneville International began operating KYMX, KZZO, KNCI and KHTK, as well as four other stations in San Francisco, under a local marketing agreement upon the closure of the merger on November 17, 2017, on behalf of the Entercom Divestiture Trust.[4][5][6]

In August 2018, Bonneville subsequently announced its intent to acquire all eight stations outright for $141 million.[7]

KYMX-HD2

KYMX's HD2 subcarrier, which has yet to sign on, will offer an Oldies format focusing on music from the 1950s and 1960s.[8]
