KIIT School of Law (KLS) is a private law school imparting legal education to the students. The institution is situated in Bhubaneswar, Odisha within the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) campus, to which it is affiliated. KLS offers five years integrated course in BA LL.B., BBA LL.B. and BSc LL.B. with Honors specialization in different areas of law; LL.M. and PhD.
KLS offers five year dual degree integrated courses in BA LL.B., BBA LL.B. and BSc LL.B.. The courses are divided into ten semesters with six papers in each of the semesters. The courses are designed in such a way that it combine law degrees with papers in liberal arts, management and natural sciences. From the Sixth semester, student can choose from Constitutional law, Business law, International trade law, Intellectual property Rights, Crime and Criminology, Human Rights, Taxation law and International law as honors specialization. Several other Honors papers can be added on request of at least ten students expressing their interest to take that specialization as honors subject. Students can also select from several seminar courses which are taught.
KLS also offers LL.M. and PhD academic programmes. KLS offers one year LL.M. degree program with specialization in International and Comparative Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, Criminal and Security Law, Family and Social Security Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Legal Pedagogy and Research.[1]
KLS have six separate departments; Department of Public Law, Department of Private Law, Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution, Department of Liberal Arts, Department of Business Studies and Department of Natural and physical sciences.
All the courses of KIIT Law School are approved by Bar Council of India and are affiliated to the parent KIIT University. The courses have been designed with the help of Prof. N.L. Mitra, an eminent law professor and former Director of National Law School of India University, Bangalore and Former Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Jodhpur and other dignitaries of the field.
Infrastructure
The institute is located within a campus of 400 acres (1.6 km2) in the temple city of Bhubaneswar. The infrastructure is world class with a six floor study complex, boys and girls hostel and a technologically advanced conference hall. KIIT has a central library consisting more than 90,000 books and journals on various topics and also have access to several renowned web libraries and journals. Services provided to the users include, Current Awareness Service (CAS), Reference Service, Documentation Service, Reprographic Service, Digital Library and Web Library. Apart from the central library, KIIT Law School maintains its own huge library which is spread across three floors - Reading section - Journal section - Lending section for assisting the students and teachers. The library has subscribed to electronic databases like Manupatra, LexisNexis and Westlaw and several other web journals.
Separate hostel facilities are available for boys and girls and two gymnasium. KIIT also has several buses to meet the transportation need of the students and staffs. An in-house computerized Post Office is functioning from the Campus.
Guest Lectures, Seminars, Conferences
KLS introduced three memorial lectures to pay tribute to three legal luminaries. These are:
H.R.Khanna Memorial Lecture: H.R.Khanna Memorial Lecture was delivered by Mr.Gopal Subramaniam, Additional Solicitor General of India in 2011 and the event was presided by Hon'ble Justice Ranganath Misra, former Chief Justice of India.
The same lecture for the subsequent year, 2012 was delivered by Justice Dipak Misra
H.M.Seervai Memorial Lecture: Delivered by Hon'ble Justice Satya Brata Sinha, former Judge Supreme Court of India, presided Mr.Bishwabhuhan Harichandan the then Minister of Law, Industries and Rural Development, Government of Odisha.
Justice Y.V.Chandrachud Memorial Lecture: Delivered by Hon'ble Justice Arijit Pasayat, former Judge Supreme Court of India in presence of Prof. Moolchand Sharma, the then Vice-Chairman, University Grant Commission, New Delhi. The same lecture for the year 2009 was delivered by Hon'ble Justice Ramesh Chandra Lahoti, former Chief Justice of India in presence of His Excellency Shri.Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, Governor of Odisha.
During December 2010, KLS organized many events of international repute including first ever International Law Week and International Victimology Conference.
The International Law Week, a novel initiative of School of Law, was organized with the objective of providing students of law with an opportunity of interaction with some of the global leaders of the legal fraternity. The nine-day programme included workshops, seminars; practical exercises and open house discussions with globally reputed legal scholars. The classes were conducted under the guidance of Prof. J. Martin Hunter, Emeritus Professor, KIIT Law School, Bhubaneswar and Nottingham Trent University, U.K. and his team of his past research assistants and alumni of King's College London. There were special lectures on all days delivered by eminent personalities from legal and allied fields. Hon'ble Justice A. K. Patnaik, Judge, Supreme Court, Shri Navin Chawla, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Shri Ashok Parija, Sr. Advocate and Member, BCI, Dr. Sumate Yamnoon, General Secretary, UMAP, Hon'ble Ms. Justice Gita Mittal, Judge, Delhi High Court, Shri Fali S. Nariman, Sr. Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Lord Justice Mark Oliver Saville, former Judge, Supreme Court of U.K., Mr. Sanjay Wadvani, British Dy. High Commissioner, Eastern India and Shri Ram Jethmalani, Sr. Advocate, Supreme Court of India were some of the speakers who illuminated the audience. This endeavour of KIIT School of Law, a leading law school in the country set up on the pattern of National Law Schools by KIIT University, was an attempt towards internationalization of legal education as envisaged by the National Knowledge Commission, Govt. of India.
Admission
Students are admitted to the institute through an all India common test known as KLSAT (KIIT Law School Admission Test), which is generally conducted in the month of May. Apart from the score in the KLSAT, a student must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination in any stream with at least 50% marks. For BSc LL.B. (hons) applicants 10+2 or equivalent in the science stream with at least 55% marks is a must. Age is no bar as students of any age can simply appear for the exam.
Admission to LL.M. is through KLSAT where the essential qualification includes a LL.B. degree from a recognized University with at least 55% marks. Students in their final year of Law School may also apply provided that at the time of admission the applicant should submit the required documents.
An applicant seeking admission to PhD program must have ; Master of Laws degree from any recognized university having scored a minimum of 55%; or M.Phil in Law from a recognized university; or master's degree in any social science or allied discipline relevant to the field of research as may be decided by the Director in consultation with the concerned PhD Committee with minimum of 55% marks. The selection is made on the basis of overall academic career, interview and performance in the presentation of research proposal. Candidates having long years of professional experience and exhibiting research aptitude may also be admitted to the program.
